Im currently tearing down a VS Ecotec plenum and intake for some extreme cleaning, boring, polishing. Only the inside ofcourse :P
I took a look at the intake. Saw this spring:
What is it, what does it do. I cant remember the size of the whole in my MACE 12mm spacer, but would the spacer effect the operation of this?
Ill give you a quick run down of what im doing to see if i can do anything to this "thing".
Iv got a 69mm MACE throttle body, 70mm AFM, custom piping from box to TB. Also have the MACE 12mm spacer and 12MM insulator. Im currently sanding and polishing the inside of the plenum and also porting the TB hole to suit my new one.
Then i was planing to do pretty much the same on the manifold, except port the holes from the runners to suit the plenum (as you have seen, some times its not a nice finish on the inside) and port the outlet to the heads.
So back to the original question, what is it? What does it do? And can it be modified for any reason. Thanks.
That is where you pcv is. I would replace it while your cleaning it.
Can you please explain this part abit more? As i dont know to much about the ecotecs, i will however do a search on this name you gave me. Cheers for your help.
Cheers, found out what it does and so on. Best bet, as you said, replace it. But also red, a oil catch can can come in handy. Just hope i can hide it as i have never liked that sort of -keyword- shit.
That spring retains your pcv valve (positive crankcase ventilation). Essentially its an emissions control device which recirculates hydrocarbons produced in the crankcase back through the inlet manifold so they are drawn back in with the inlet air charge and combusted in the motor, rather than discharging into the atmosphere.
Remove the spring and then you will be able to remove the pcv valve by pulling straight up with a pair of long nosed pliers. To determine whether a pcv valve is functional, just shake it. If it rattles, its fine, if not it needs replacing.
What could be the effects of a Bad PCV Valve ?
Stuck closed, oil leaks. Stuck open maybe rough idle.
if it doesn't rattle, soak it in petrol to clean it out. if it still doesn't rattle then replace it
