Alright so i finally got my new radiator. was going to put it in today but the weather is just too shitty. Anyway replacing the radiator isnt a drama, but i want to flush the whole system out before i put the new one in, can i just jam the hose where the thermostat goes? And just let the hose run for a while lol? And where abouts are the bleed screws? Or if someone has a ellorys manual or something and could scan/email the pages that would be really good
You need to reverse flush by jamming the hose into the lower radiator hose connection and letting it run out the upper radiator hose opening (before you install the thermostat). There are no bleeder screws on a Holden V8. Just fill the radiator and start the engine with the radiator cap off and the heater set to hot. As the bubbles appear in the radiator cap opening, the level of coolant in the radiator will drop. Keep topping up the coolant until it looks like overflowing then replace the radiator cap. Fill the overflow reservoir with coolant to the hot mark, and top it up over the next couple of days as any air left in the system is purged.
thanks heaps for that mate, was looking for a bleeder screw and couldnt find any so that'd be why lol. going to have a go tommorow hopefully the weather is good. Also hope it doesnt take to long
If u have to get any bits, stop at holden and get a new o ring for the thermosts housing($1.50 i think), if not dont worry much. Put some blue silicon or someyhing in with the o ring when you seal it all back up regardless, i always find they weep otherwise. Shout yourself a couple new hose clamps while your at it.
didnt think to get that, ill try rarespares, their only a 10 min drive away anyways. Cheers for that
is there anything else i can use other then that high temp silicone? Dont wanna buy a whole tube and just leave it sitting around and probly never use it again lol
You dont have to use high temp stuff, as its only gonna get to 120C max. I just used standard blue silicon, if not you could get one of those multi fit thermostst housing gaskets and just put that in there. But i have just used standard clear silicon too before aswell, not sure on the long term implications of that would be but it seems ok.
However, you could just use the factory o ring with nothing else and see how you go. Im sure they dont all leak, I just had alot of trouble with mine even with a new oem "o ring". It wasnt a big leak, which was the problem. I kept overflowing the coolant overflow bottle and couldnt find out why, all it was a weeping around the thermostsat housing that kept causing the system to prematurely lose pressure when the engine was turned off and not sucking the coolant back out of the overflow as it cooled.
Right well i found some sort of black gasket glue and though that would be better then nothing. When i pulled it out it had the o ring. I bought a tridon replacement, before you mentioned holden do them for like 1.50 . the tridon one cost me ten bucks just for the bloody o ring. Anyway i put the o ring and a gasket and sealent stuff. So it shouldn't leak. Ill keep an eye on it over the next few days. Cheers fro all your help mate
