okay here,s the deal been working on my vr for 7 days now had auto electicicians go over it mechanics and no one can work out what is wrong. okay codes im getting... code 31,and code 46... i got spark in leads ,ignition module is working hall sensor is working distributor is working put in new fuel pump, fuel is getting to the rails and circulating back to the fuel tank put in new map sensor, new oil pressure sensor and that was all before i got the auto elecs out he was there for hours and he put it to the ecu or the memcal been through 2 ecus 3 memcals and still no go it cranks over everything is working but the check engine light is still on and not starting. mechanic doesn,t know even rang holden they were clueless has anybody got any suggestions cause im running out of stuff to rule out
WelcomeSounds like an immobiliser issue. With the ignition 'on' does the little red light under the radio turn off and stop blinking??? Whilst this light is blinking the bcm has disabled your injector pulse. i.e. whilst you have fuel pressure and a return, the injectors are not pulsing.
Are you getting a good contact between the metal tab on the keyhead and the ring around the ignition barrel? What's the condition of the battery in the keyhead?
yeah light turn of sometimes i have to hit the unlock button on the key for it to go of and even with light of wont start but cranks
when auto elec came out he turned of the immobiliser with the machine and still no go
sorry new to these forums yeah i bent the metal bits out on the ignition. is getting good contact. i though might be the key to but auto elec said its working fine cause it lock and unlocks and disables immobiliser
Have you checked the basics like cleaning and ensuring a good contact with the crank angle sensor wiring?
yeah mate done all that before got auto elec out. thats part why im stumped got good everything but missing something. pulling apart the key rite now
i think the code 31 is causing code 46 but could be wrong
i was having a problem similar ages ago and after alot of mucking about i went and bought a new battery (it was due for one) and first turn of the key it fired up.
whats the best way to pull the key apart to check out the battery and stuff without screwing it up, or is it easier to just go and get a new key?
just dont wanto wreck the key i have cause i lost my spare moving house
okay i honestly think now its the key or ignition barrel the key is loose in the barrel and also key looks worn will try again tomorrow... THANKS for all your help guys![]()
You need to see if you have injector pulse then. You could lift the rail and see if it squirts, but you can also buy little injector test globes to plug into the injector plug and see if it flashes. Do you have 12v at the injectors? You should have it there permanently i think(with ign on), and the other wire is earthed by D16 at the ecu each time it needs to fire.
However the only thing thing that stops this is the immobiliser i think. Which is all to do with the key head and its communications with the bcm and ecu. But if the tech has dissabled the immobiliser then you would think that it would be ok in that department.
But thats not to say a plug/connector/join has blocked 12v getting to the injectors, or the D16 ecu terminal.
What caused all this to start, were you working on anything? or did you just go out oneday to start the car and it was all over.
I have the same exact problem. 94 VR Caprice 5.0L
Cranks, spark fine, no injector pulse, ECU is not grounding the banks at pins C15, C16. ECU gounds are .2 to .5 ohms. at C2, C3 and C15. B+ at D1
Code 46 no ref. pulse while cranking present. Ignition module and key barrel changed 3 monts ago. fuel pump runs at key on or cranking.
I think you will find that the Hall Effect switch in the distributor may have failed. You should note that it's possible for the ignition system to provide spark, yet there may not be any distributor reference reference pulses at the PCM/ECM. Hence the engine won't start.
I had code 46 some time ago...no reference signal while cranking...turned out to be the hall effect sensor in the dizzy. New dizzy in and all good. Symptom was - turning over but not firing.
