Hi ive got this problem with my vr at the moment...firstly the gear changes are extremely sloppy, they dont just click into their defined spot like they should (theres kind of an art to knowing if its in the right spot or not) and the second problem is its temperementalness..somedays you get in and it will change its gears fine ...other days or other times of the day it its like it doesnt know when it should be changing gear and changes late but all that takes is a little wiggle of the shifter back and forth in the drive position and it comes good..the gear box is serviced and has actually been put in recently and ive driven the car it was out of before hand and it was sweet. the thing is i want to sell this car (not because of that) but having to do little tricks like that with gear box's doesnt look good to prospective buyers but other than that the cars tip top so if anyones experienced anything similar or knows how this could maybe be adjusted and corrected id love to hear from you
cheers fellas
Id start by checking for any logged error codes.Below is a link to a post that shows you how to do this simple test..

cheers man that s a pretty bloody handy little trick!!!
How does it drive when you manually change the gears?....all changes are usually sloppy in auto's as you have the torque converter which makes every change feel "smooth". Back a few years, auto boxes were called "slush boxes" so maybe what you describe is normal.

it drives fine..its just the physical feel of the shifter as u for eg take it from park to drive..theres no definitive spot for each gear u just kind of like the shifter round about where it needs to go..BUT if i do it from underneath the car directly on the gearbox with my hands its all firm clicks between gears but obviously doing it like this isnt ideal whilst driving so its something between the box and the shifter that needs...something?..its the slightest knock or bump in the road can put it out of where its meant to be and then its not in gear properly and f'ks it..but yeah manually changing them is ok
Check your shifter assembly, if you start pulling appart your centre console you will see what I mean, there is plate that looks kinda like this
See that brass piece on the left, that will determine gear selection and lock your shifter leaver into position, your car will have something similar.
It may have been rounded off who knows.
i think u may be right man and thanks for gettin back to me with that pi...il have a look tommorow morning in the light but ive seen under the console before and im pretty certain the brass "cog like'' thing that the shifter was on does have very rounded edges i might have to hunt down a new one but will check it out and let u know ..thanks again!!
