I need some statesman/ calais woodgrain for drivers side panel!!
The moaning groaning type sound when the steering wheel is turned is a common problem on the VS's.It is caused by the bush where the steering column passes through the firewall into the engine bay.You just need to spray WD 40 right up into this bush from the engine bay side of the firewall.Just make sure you get heaps up in there.I had this problem with my VS when I first got it,and after being told I needed a new P/S pump etc, I read on here about this steering column bush going dry and causing this noise, and how the WD40 fixes it,and I tried it,and have never had the noise return.Ive since fixed this problem on a few of these cars now.
Is there anychance you post me a pic of where to spray up? or some detailed directions :P
I can get a pic of it and post it up tomorrow. Its on the drivers side of the engine bay, pretty much straight underneath the brake booster/master cylinder, but back at the firewall. You can see the steering rod where it comes out of the firewall and goes down to the rack.If you get someone to move the steering wheel back and forth as you look down in this area ,you should see the steering rod moving..The WD needs to be sprayed up into this area where the rod comes out of the firewall..Spray it from the engine bay side of the firewall..not from inside the car. Also it needs to be sprayed upwards sort of, and its pretty awkward to get a spraycan up in there. It could even be easier to get at it from under the car.

+1 for bretts solution;
worked for me and hasn't been annoying since! its a little hard to get it under the bush though so try and use the extender arm on the wd40 can and get it underneath the bush
follow the steering column all the way down from the steering wheel untill it disapeers through that rubber bush. wd40 usually only works for a few months in my experience, get an ink cartridge refill syringe, fill it with rubber grease (The stuff you lube your brake caliper guide pins with, or should anyway) fill it up with that and get it right into the mofo and all around the seal etc,
hasn't failed yet years later.
that should be good thanksand dont worry good if i still cant find it ill ask for a pic but that should be sweet.
cheers cracka, your always quick to offer advice![]()
okay so as soon as i fixed this noise, i got another one which i (think) is coming from the main belt? as i rev the sqeaking noise gets higher in pitch at no revs its just a constant squeak squeak squeak, around 3 every 2 seconds, any ideas?
First of all all the VS's have that steering noise problem,Holden knew about it from day 1 and the serpintine belt is making that constant squeaking noise so replace it
+9999 for Brett_jjj comment i had the same problem so i tried the WD40 got under the car and sprayed heaps then under the drivers foot well i put some in there at first it didnt go away for a couple of days till you spun the steering wheel around heaps for all the wd40 to get right in to it and stop the noise good luck
serpintine belt being? sorry but youll have to explian a fair bit, as ive said im no mechanic :P
Serpintine belt is the big fan belt at the front of your engine.
hey guys do the vr models have the same problem aswell?
whats the belt on the front of the engine called? first and only belt you really look at
The fan belt.
well mine has cracks in it so im guessing it need changing? how do i go about this![]()
First draw a quick diagram of where the belt runs. Then get a 15mm ring spanner on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the whole pulley and tensioner left or anti clockwise, which will slacken the belt, whilst holding it slack, slip the belt off the water pump pulley and remove the belt. These V6 engines have the best belt setup Ive ever seen on any car as far as removing and replacing the belt goes..
if spraying rubber bush with wd 40 fails, try replaceing both power steering hoses(and clamps), had the noise on mine and it went away, the hoses get old and hard and the clamps dont seal correctly and air get sucked into p/s lines, so try that.
so with buying a new belt, would racing belts make any differences or tomato tometo?
Yes, had the same problem and it drove me nuts. Advice on here is correct, it is the bush where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. However, if you remove the black plastic panel above the brake/accelerator pedals, it is much easier to get at. Just don't lose the odd retaining clips (4) that hold the panel in place. The hex screws in the four retaining clips are there to spread the retaining clip legs and hold it in place, like a wall cavity plug.
Thanks for the help, guys.
Mate that sounds so much better I`ll get around to it soon thanks.![]()
