Default vr v6 hard starting post no: 2000

ok guys here another hard starting question
vr v6 auto wagon around 230klms

stalled on me 3 times the other night , restarted straight away
if i kept my foot on the accelerator it didnt stall

leads and plugs are only about 3 months old as is air filter

when you start it cold first start of a morn it fires straight away
after driving it for 15 minutes today , then went to restart just cranked nothing else
done that about 5 times then it started
driving it home it backfired once and cut out a few times, i didnt come to a stop
but if i kept my foot down it started again didnt need to use the key

i really dont think its the cas
when i start the car i can hear the fuel pump prime, but im thinking it might be the fuel pump crapping itself , fuel filter only changed a few months ago
i always fuel up at the same place and have no reason to think bad fuel

the car is a wagon, if i need to replace the fuel pump, in a wagon can you get to the pump from in the rear of the station wagon

or could it be a coil pack, what type signs do they give if they are failing

    thanks

    ^+1.

Why don't you think it's the CAS? Your description screams it

When it doest not start just cranking over check for spark if there is no spark the its the ignition side of things CAS,IGN MODULE,COILS. sounds like the CAS though.
Get a spark tester can pick one up from repco there cheap.
If your so worried about the fuel pump check the fuel pressure it is giving out 40-45psi reading is the norm.

    Thanks guys

i did pour a bit of water over the cas and it didnt seem to make any difference
i will do a diagnostic check

probably wouldnt hurt to change the cas i guess
i just dont want to drive it at the moment and get stuck somewhere

i have another car , so i will drive that til i change the cas and see how i go

    thanks

All you got to do is check for spark when the car is just cranking over if there is no spark then it would be the IGN components.
    Then you go from there

    i replaced the cas today
doing a few other things while im at it, i changed the water pump had a new one sitting here as a spare
putting a new intake manifold gasket on, the other ones a bit weepy
and will replace the rocker gaskets
should sort out all the oil leaks then

oh and going to put a new heater tap in the old ones pretty buggered

so i cant start it till i finish everything

used the starter method to crack the balancer bolt worked a treat 1st go

do you guys locktite the balancer bolt when you put it back on
the old balancer on the motor was well on its way to being rooted
i had a spare here from another vr in pretty good condition

the original balancer had 30 stamped on the front in the rubber
and the other one i have has got 6o stamped in the rubber, but they are both from a vr v6
anyone see any problem with the difference ?

Check error codes, the CAS will throw a code most of the time.
