What do you guys thinks a good oil for a VS V8 5.0l and what viscocity watt etc? I am currently using penrite 20w-50. Is this okay, if so what's a better grade oil, I got told not to use fully synthetic?? I like to drive it hard now and then so what's best for these conditions? Cheers
royal purple is pretty much for people who love their car. be prepared to pay for it though.
you got told to not use fully synthetic because your 5l doesnt need it. overkill.
penrite or castrol are your best bet. 20w-50 is good if your 5l has some kms behind it, which i presume it has. what was it last serviced with?
full synthetic isn't recommended for 304s if they have existing oil leaks- can make it worse. Penrite HPR 15 is good- 15w 60

Only bought the car not so long ago so don't know what oil was in it.. How much is this royal purple oil? Never heard of it b4? Would it really make any difference compared to what I am currently using?(penrite 20w-50)
Any thing from the supermarket that's cheap will work well guys.
My VC Commodore Group3 used to go 60,000 between changes, Think I only did it once a year if I remembered.
Had to get rid of that car it had done 600,000 on the original motor, auto tranny, and Diff.. I sold it for $750 to a wrecker in 1996 and there wasn't a single thing on the car that wasn't totally worn out.. even the back of the rear view mirror was chalky..
It was an Ozzie V8 they go forever..

I use royal purple in my 6L and it costs me $88 for a 5L bottle delivered to my door, so its not that bad i thought
Cold starts affect oil more than KM's do. Something that I was told many years ago was to change the oil according to the seasons, not how many k's the car has done. You can do bugger all k's but a lot of short trips and it will kill the oil faster than long runs that build up k's quickly.
I do ours 3 times a year, November, May and August. In warmer weather cold starts are fewer than in the winter months.
Any oil that meets the spec is fine. It's not a race car.

I swear by Penrite, HPR 10 or 15. You want a low W number to stop wear at start up.
A 0w will pour at -35cels, 5w pours at -30 etc.
W number is cold "flowablity". That's why beemas etc come with such low W ratings, because their winters are so cold.
In Aus you'd be fine with a 10w-50 or 20w-60.

Never had a problem with Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 and it's reasonably priced especially if you snap up 3 or 4 bottles whenever it goes on special at Supercheap which it is at the moment.
lol, that is all...

+1 for HPR 15, 15w60. when its a 45° day sitting in traffic and still give fantastic protection.
As for service every 60k, my father inlaw has not done a change in his VR for over 150K, still purrs like a kitten. the oil is like tar lol. has well over 500k on the clock lol
I have an old barina that was put into a tree in my younger years - cracked the sump so the oil leaked out. We just mix the fuel up like you do for a two stroke and thrash it about on the farm - it's done about 600km like this...
Old cars were obviously BUILT TOUGH and love the abuse!
shit i use mobil 1 every 7k now has 130k the motor pulls like a train...but am i doin the wrong thing using full syn and its not cheap, but from new its had mobil 1 evey 5k to 7k with filter,
If the vehicle is running well with the Penrite 20w50 oil grade why change ?
If the vehicle has never had a full synthetic after 14-16 years there's a good chance that there are false engine seals that be exposed due to the extra cleaning power of full synthetics.
Once the false seals are removed the dried out gaskets are possibly cracked and will not swell back to its orginal shape and weeping or leaks may appear.
At that vehcile age I would be reluctant to change the oil grade and oil brand used over the life of the car. Not worth the risk, from my reading switch to synthetics before 6 years or 80000km general rule of thumb to avoid potential issues.
Most mineral oils have quite good additive cleaning packs and will suit most driving applications. If you are worrired just change the oil more often according to the extreme driving conditions of detailed in the operating manual.
BTW Royal purple is an over rated engine oil IMO.
