well im going to swear alot i bought this 94 vr commodore slammed on its arse hsv kit, bald tyres un captive springs, brake hose leak, 4 grand i bought this piece of shit for because it look quite quite just cosmetic but perfect for a 3 or 4 year long project. regret paying 4 thats for sure!! anyway.
its just started knocking (yay) knock knock knock on idle from the front bottom, no knock perfect runner when throttle is in slightly or hard. any ideas of where to start looking? cheers.
suicidal commie lover.
Worn harmonic balancer?
ima go quickly check and take a video see if anyone can identify...the noise is coming more from the bottom then balancer. thats the pulley to the left of alternator and right of power steering correct?
Yeah id almost guarantee its a a sticky lifter. Does you oil light flicker? Not that that it wouldn't happen if it didn't come on. Change the oil to a thicker grade and see if it still happens. Cheap way to eliminate an issue and can only do your car some good...
As BlackVXGTS says, harmonic balancer - check by removing the serpentine belt - if knock goes away then that's the problem. You might also be able to see it wobbling at idle. The harmonic balancer is the large pulley at the very bottom of the engine and bolts to the end of the crankshaft....it has a rubber centre that eventually shears.

with the engine off you try and turn the pulleys/belt with your hands if it turns half and inch either way with not much resitance, its your harmonic balancer.![]()
i thought that was the crank pulley just a different name i presume lol. will check after work cheers guys.
whats the chances its a rod or piston or something quite serious?
no wobbling at idle.
haha well what the f*** do ya know. im %100 guessing that the rubber inside the crank pulley is all meant to be there because if its not mine is missing a huge chunk out of the 'harmonic balancer'... so i presumming thats the knocking noise. how does it make such a devestating noise just by loosing a bit of rubber?
another question is there any precatuions putting a new harmonic balancer on? just slap on rattle up and off ya go?

try this
Removing Harmonic Balancer
You're Harmonic Balancer is there to do exactly as the name describes to take the Harmonic's out of the motor (Or vibration if you like), they use rubber to do this, so if the rubber breaks away, then you are going to start to have knocking and or vibration noises. That is not to say other things can't throw out the exact same symptoms. You will need to remove you're thermo fan (4 10mm bolts and unplug the electrical connector) You can try and use a rattle gun, if not get a breaker bar with the 22 or 24mm socket (can't remember which one), then get a long piece of pipping and rest the end of the pipe on the ground (on the drives side).
Give you're motor a few hard cranks, don't let it start. If the bolt doesn't crack, start the motor for a split second then turn it off. This will crack the bolt for sure. You will need to get a 150mm Harmonic Balancer puller from supercheap or repco. Loosen off the bolt, but don't take it out, put the the 3 jaws evenly around the Harmonic Balancer and start to wind in the center bit on the Puller. You will need to get a socket or spanner to help wind it in.
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
Thanks guys
