Hi boys I was driving along when my car started coughing an splatting so i give it the gas an a flat spot wont even rev feels like its out of fuel so i put in $30 changed the fuel filter now it wont start when it does runs only for bout 5sec then cuts out even when i try an give it a rev anyone had this problem an fixed any comments will be great VR BT1 5speed
fuel pump maybe? which filter did you change?
My money's on fuel pump. Try giving the bottom of the fuel tank a few hits with a rubber mallet or similar and see if that does anything. Hard but not to hard though.
Filter next to fuel tank
Good chance it's the pump then if you can't hear it priming when you turn the key on.
deff the fuel pump...... should sound like a mozzie in a tin can whilst priming...
Dont guess work do tests.
First of check fuel pump circuit fuse, The ECM signals the fuel pump relay to energize so check for power at the relay base when reds are on if there is no power then the ECM is at fault.
check fuel pump relay is energizing.
If this checks out fine then check fuel pressure to see if the pump is working. to spec
If this is all ok your problem lies some where else.
People just because the fuel pump does not turn on it does not mean the actual unit it self is not working.
also, fuel pump wont be allowed to run if the ecu doesn't see any oil pressure. I usually remove this when i wire in efi into an early holden so cust can retain original oil pressure gauge.
just another thing to check
You will find that the fuel pump relay is a change over relay. If the ECM see's there is oil pressure and the starter relay does not energize for what ever reason.
The fuel pump can still work. There is a bypass circuit from the oil pressure switch circuit. So by you removing this option has the reverse effect as well.
So what i am trying to say is if the relay fails there is no back up circuit for the fuel pump now.
This is Assuming you have open circuited the oil pressure link to the fuel pump circuit.
I've always rewired from scratch and eliminated everything possible so there's less headaches, I didn't realise the full intent of how they're originally wired. I just saw in the wiring diagrams that the oil pressure switch had control of the fuel pump side of things and most of the conversions I've done required a pressure sender for the dash so i eliminated the switch in the assumption that without oil pressure the fuel pump wouldn't run.
Sorry if i've given a bum steer of sorts.
ive got same problem happened in about the same way... 205,xxkm 1/4 tank ran like shit wouldn't respond to revs died wouldn't start, no whirling sound from pump haven't solved it and its doing my head in
