Hi Guys.
With all the extra power I have been pushing from my VS I haven't done a thing to the brakes which is rather scary when hammering through the hills as we all know how little stopping power the stock VS brakes have.
Whats are my options in regards to brake upgrades on the VS.
Not looking to spend a huge amount but I want something better than what I have.
Thanks
you can put a VT 1-1/4" master cylinder in, it'll help a bit and pave the way for having bigger calipers and rotors later.
there's threads on how to adapt the vt master cylinder onto your existing vs booster
Get slotted rotors and better brake pads. No need to go crazy on a street car.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Not sure, but i've seen kits that will bolt straight up with adaptor plates but haven't seen anything around that's claimed to bolt on with no mods or adaptors etc.
All i can suggest is to buy a pair of calipers from a wrecker and test bolt them up and look up on dba's website on the size specs or ve rotors to see what differences there are in sizes.
You may be in luck and find it's a similar upgrade to what the vl turbo/vn v8 calipers/rotors were to early commodore v8 and vn vp v6 where they will bolt on with no hassles.
when you get bigger calipers and rotors, the original master cylinder wont be strong enough to effectively operate the bigger hardware, so it's probably smarter to improve this area first.
I've only done the booster and master cylinder upgrades on my car as i can't fit the bigger brakes under my 16" walky rims and i refuse to have anything bigger. (rim size to me is similar choice to v6 development is to others which is why i can appreciate the modding v6 line in your signature)
Hey mate try these guys: VE Twin Piston Upgrade Package suit VB-VZ Commodore!!!
VT V6 fitted with DMS gold 40mm coilovers, Whiteline adjustable swaybars & strut brace, 330mm AP racing brakes, Rebuilt 3.45:1 LSD and a Powerdyne supercharger
Check it out: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...-v6-racer.html
you have a few options.
1. hsv big brake upgrade twin pots from VS GTS etc, .
PRO: no change in pedal feel as it was designed for this model. awesome upgrade from experience. can pickup full secondhand kit for $400-800
CON: can be expensive to replace rotors, need minimum 17inch rims
2. VT brakes twin pots, larger than standard vs brakes,
PRO: cheap upgrade to buy and replace rotors
CON: spongy pedal feel, may have to replace lines, and master cylinder
3. VE brake twin pot
PRO: new kits, modest cost upgrade, cheap to replace rotors
CON: ??? dont know of anyone or heard of anyones issues.
4. other larger 2-6pot,
PRO: great stopping power
CON: expensive to purchase and to replace rotors, may need more custom mods to fit. master cylinder will need to be modded or changed
hope that helps
wish i had the spare $$$$, the ve v6 upgrade kit would still be an improvement on my vh and still keep the 16's
time to suck up to the wife and maybe rub her back.......
I do the VE upgrade kit for $795 shipped for the VS.
The other option would be to just upgrade to slotted rotors and pads all round for $475 shipped. The slotted rotor I do is a custom curve slot with dimples.
As far as bolt on, the only 2 options you have is anything that came with a VR/S HSV, or do a master/booster upgrade to the VT style and bolt on vt calpiers and rotors. The only thing with the VT rotors is you need a cheap "egg ring" looking spacer that you put on the hub that takes up the small gap between the vt rotor center and vs hub. Besides that, the brakes all bolt up, just the booster needs modding to fit.
VE brakes fit in the kit like Naab sells, but it is with the aid of an adaptor bracket as they dont bolt straight up. Im told they work well. Only problem is the cost, but you dont need to do the booster though, which makes it a simple upgrade.
You just gota way up what u wanna spend and how much time and ability you have.
Just a little error with this one. 16" Rims will clear VS GTS brakes with out a drama. These are the same calipers which came out on the SV5000 (which ran 16" rims). Also the control brake caliper of the VN/VP/EA Saloon car class which all run 16" rims.
Although rotors are still dam expensive.

This mod fitted to a VS booster will give a firmer pedal, requiring a greater pedal effort to deliver the same line pressure.
An advantage would be the brakes will react much faster.
The standard VS master is a 'fast fill' type with a 7/8" bore and a 1 1/16" fast fill chamber.
The standard VT master is a 'fast fill' type with a 1" bore and a 1 1/8" fast fill chamber.
As the VT uses a larger bore master (to accomodate the larger volume of fluid needed) it also uses a double diaphram booster to restore pedal effort.
