    Default welded diffs

just wondering is it wise to reweld a diff that the welds broke on or just a new diff and weld it as thinking of welding both diffs its for a burnout car not street use

Welding anything will generally weaken the parent material. If the welds have failed then it will be more likely to fail again. IMO a welded diff is a poor man's locker diff. If you can spare the expense for a spool or good LSD then that could be the way to go.

It won't hurt to try welding the diff up again if that is what you are keen on doing.
If you can: Clean the surfaces with solvent, air dry for a suitable period of time (so you don't catch on fire or burn your garage down) and heat up the area where you will be welding with an oxy torch so that it heats up to a "dull red" and then weld onto that glowing surface. Lay down a strong weld run into the heated area using low hydrogen rods that are dry (drying rods in a oven for 15 minutes on allow temperature will pull any moisture out of the rods). MIG or TIG won't have this problem if you are using Argon as the shielding gas.
Put the heat back on the weld when you have completed the weld run and allow the welded areas to cool down slowly. Quench with oil when the welds cool down below the "dull red" colour. Submerse the parts in oil for an hour if you can. Water is no good here. Quenching the welds with water will result in brittle welds that will be prone to cracking.

It will be far easier to get a second hand "open diff" center and convert that to a locker with a mini-spool or full spool hat. Good luck with it and enjoy!

    Nah. Spins that no probs.

I have a pod filter and LEDs so I estimate my V6 now has 300Kw ATW.

BW78 diffs are bloody hard to get weld into you have to weld it with the centre pulled in half and that only gets one side welded the second side you have to weld through a half inch hole in the centre and is not fun LOL

spool is cheap and a lot more reliable, just tell him to do it. Any average mechanic could install on in a open center in the same time it takes to weld a center, clean it out etc.
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!

because we were both curious and i think if he keeps breaking welds as last one they couldnt actually open the centre right up as the one in it was bashed out big time so thought it wasnt going to last but stayed locked the hole time
