hey guys, ive looked through heaps of old threads but can't find just what im after, im thinking of doing a gear box oil change as i recon it probably needs it, probably hasnt had one for a couple of years, any ways i just wanted to know what colour the box oil should be at the moment it's kinda dull orangy brown colour, ive seen a few and they were a bright red, but i dont know if it's for a getrag so any help would be apreciated.
Cheers
Assuming its auto.
It should be red. It will start to tinge brown with use. If it were black your gearbox isn't in good shape.
When you do the fluid do the filter too. There was a really good tut on how to do it on a vt (I think). Older ones are the same.
thanks for the info mate but my utes a manual so i am unsure if the fluid should be red or a different colour like the colour it is now.
It will be due for a change anyway so just buy the required amount for a full change and compare the new with the old color.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
With a manual gearbox, there is really no real colour it should be. If you were to drain the oil out of my manual it would come out blue (Redline lightweight gearoil). It comes down to personal preference of what the previous owner/service guy has used. It could range from red (auto fluid used) to a browny colour (gear oil used).
Although if it hasn't been changed in a while, you may want to think about giving it some fresh oil.

yea thanks guys, i didnt think there was a specific gear oil colour but i didnt think that it would be a browny orange, anaways thanks for the help im off to buy some oil and give it a change, hopefully might get a bit of an improvement of of the box as well, but i doubt it its pretty old and worn, oh well have to wait till i rebuild the car.
The VS workshop manual says that the VS series 1 manual transmission uses 2.05 litres of Dexron111(3) auto transmission fluid, with 150 mls of Lubrizol 7906.
The VS series 2 manual transmission uses 1.7 litres of 75W - 85W gear oil.
The series 1 VS has the T5 gearbox fitted. The series 2 VS has the Getrag type 260 gearbox fitted.
well mines a series three and im pretty sure it's got a t260 in it so i just put in 80w 90, the website recomended 80w 85 but they didn't have that, i don't think it will make to much of a difference anyways it feels better, more chrisp gear changes and less whine.
Shooter I got a series lll vs v8 and a mechanic put gear oil in it and nearly ###t the box completely. Got a manual book and quote "Dextron lll automatic fluid and lubrizol 125 ONLY" or use Nulon G70 additive Runs perfect now mate. Before when this dumb shi-t put in gear oil it took 15 mins warm up and 10 mins driving b4 I could change gears properly such as 1st to 2nd( double clutching) so yer deffinately Dexlll mate with additive. Did myself. U will need inhex socket to undo drainer plug. Hope this helps your question, coz I learnt th hard way!
thanks mate, im already running castrol 80w-90 in it and seems to be running great, 1st and second gear usually a bit hard to engage but after a couple of mins smooths up great and runs awesome, but i will take your notes on board just in case it starts to go down hill
i just installed a reco Getrag 260 gearbox.
the bloke who reconditioned it recommended using only Valvoline DuraGear 75W-85 Semi Synthetic.
