Default Dumb question about converting my VR V8 to manual.

Hey guys. Well once again i'd just like to call on your wealth of knowledge for yet another question that has probably been convered many many times before. I did a quick search on here but get too impatitient, so here goes.

I own a 94 VR V8 SS. Currently auto. Deeply considering converting it to manual as the auto is on its way out i believe. My question is simply this : Which gearbox can i use, that will bolt straight up into my car without having to change bellhousings? I'm just not up to date with all the names of these gearbox's (both V6 and V8, Getrag, T5, T5G ect). The only reason im asking this question is because i will consider using a V6 box if one is cheap and nearby.

I'm 100% confident in doing the conversion myself and sourcing all parts myself, just need to clarify what choice of gearbox's i have and maybe what you would recommend.

    Cheers guys. Tim.

i just finished a manual conversion on my vr v6. its pretty simple except for the wiring and ecu (bit of a #### around). i used the borg warner t5 for my conversion, i'm pretty sure the t5's will fit upto a v8 but not 100% sure.

Yea mate i've done about 3 manual conversions now, all on mates cars and they were all imports lol. Just trying to see what box i should be buying. I know the T5's are for the VN-VR/S V6 and the Getrag in the VS onwards for V6, but still unsure of V8

Pretty sure you will need a T5 for a V8, the v6/8 boxes are not the same.

You can either use a t5 or the getrag. The t5 is cable driven where as the getrag is hydrolic. So personally i would get the t5 as its easier to install.

Getrags came in on VS II,both V6 and V8. T5 was cable clutch, getrag was hydrolic clutch. Basicly same gear box on the inside im thinking. Difference in V6 and V8 boxes were difference gearing ratio and V8 box was a bit stronger.
T56 is the same six speeder the used in VR GTS and Senator 215i's (VN Group A had a ZF 6spd) right up to VZ and early VE's. Over the years the T56 was tweaked to give it a better feel and stuff. I dont know if the T56 started out with a cable clutch then went hydro with the VS II like the T5 or not. Im getting a T56 put in mine about mid next year if all goes well and im using the cable clutch system on the car now

If ya first part is saying the t5 and getrag are the same inside thats incorrect as they have different ratios.

Thanks for that info! I'm liking the sound of this 6 speed more and more! Will have to look into how hard it is to find one and obviously its going to be worth more too. Well by the looks of it i think ill be looking for a VN-VR T5 V8 gearbox or the T56 V8 gearbox and will probably go the cable option just to save on time and money.

Thanks for the info guys, keep any more ideas coming.
