Hi all!
For some strange reason my VR Bt1s engine is being a whore! Lol. . Sometimes when i drive it hard and then pull up the oil pressure light comes on and it makes a strange tapping sound from the engine.? I turn the engine off and re start it and the light is gone as is the tapping noise? What could it be? Its really strange. If i just drive it normal i have no problem at all. Runs like a dream! But yeah every now and then after giving it a gut full this problem happens? Any help would be great!
Just low on oil maybe or time for a change??
Or oil filter
The oil is full? It only does it now and then. Like i just gave it a little squirt this morning when i left my house and pulled up at the shops about 1k down the road and the light came on and made the tapping noise but i just put it in park and slowly increased the revs and the tapping noise got quicker with the revs then the noise just stopped? I let it idle and no problem after that?
Might be the oil filter...? When was it last replaced?
It was serviced only 3000ks ago. Could an oil filter and or using shit oil make do this tho? Its only every now and then? Today i gave it a gut full and it didnt happen? But tonight when i was coming home and passing a car it happened so i pulled over and let it idle and i slowly increased the revs and the oil light went out and so did the rattle? Ran fine all the way home? Any help would be great cause its doing my head in! Lol
Could be 2 or 3 things off the top of my head. 1st, a blocked pickup. Sump off(engine out unfortunatly) and check the pickup isnt blocked as its been known to happen on these. 2nd, it could be the oil pump is shagged and needs replacing.
The only other thing is it could be a blocked gallery which might lossen with an engine flush.....but if its a lump of somthing, it could lodge itself somwhere else unwanted too!
The ticking is a very bad sign!!! that means the engine is getting no oil! I would seriously address this problem immediatly or ur engine is gonna be pretty well kaput in a short amount of time.
I might give it a service and flush tomorrow and see how it goes? I think they put shit oil in it when it was serviced. It just seems strange because it only happens every now and then? What oil would you recommend using?
As above, blocked pickup is common.
May also be sticking relief valve in the oil pump.
Until it's fixed, dont flog it!
I've seen one of these engines tear the front of the cam off (siezed cam) due to low oil pressure.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
I Dont normally flog it. . And the noise and light doesnt come on when i just drive normal. . Ill try servicing it tomorrow and see what happens. What oil should i use?
I bet if you do not flog it, it wont happen again lol
Got lifter cleaner from auto barn today and put it in. Ill service it and change the filter. What oil should i use? It just seems so strange that it doesnt make a noise and oil light doesnt come on unless the engine is pushed? As soon as the light comes on and the tapping noise happens i turn it off and re start it again and its fine? Its really starting to do my head in! Lol. But please any help would be great.
i had lifter ticking problems. been using nulon lifter free and valvoline engine armour semi synthetic 15w-40. after 2 changes the engines perfect
Ill grab that oil tomorrow then. The car has only done 158,000ks so hopefully it cant be anything to major? As i said before it only really happens if i take off from a standing start and drive it hard until around 120kmh? The light comes on and you can hear the tapping when you stop but once you turn the engine off and re start it its fine?
well my oil light never came on but there was a noticible tapping from the valve train on cold idle and when i drove it hard. my engine had 245,000kms on it at the time. so far ive stuck with the 15-40 and it doesnt burn a drop, and with the help of the lifter free 15,000kms later on my 3rd oil change im on fresh oil with no lifter free and the engines perfect. hopefully thats all your car needs too
Ill change the oil tomorrow night and see how it goes. Thanks heaps for the help
Na its an 8 buddy.
Worn lifters probably if it is a V8.
Lifter noise is likely due to low/no oil pressure, as in 1st post.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
most standard oil pumps arnt made to compete with peak revving of the engine. either high volume oil pump or stop revving the crap out of it.
common problem with vr v8s, oil pick up starting to block up.its about the size of a 10cent piece and doesn't take much to restrict the flow.
