sounds like the key remotes just about shagged, if it hasnt been replaced i would replace it before you replace the BCM.

I am assuming the car does not crank at all.
Check for codes bridge pin 5&6 see what comes up.
Could be the Key,BCM,starter relay,or the starter motor it self.
Does your friend have a spare key? If so give that a go.

the way i read it was it starts if he locks then unlocks with the remote.

yeah tryed the code trick and its saying all is fine. he bought a new remote and still the same thing. the only way it will start is if he sits in the car. remote locks the doors and then unlocks them again and then he can start the car. otherwise there is no cranking power at all.as if the battery is flat but still has a good battery in the car. he even had the ignition barrel replaced but still no go.

Sounds like it is not making contact with the ring that goes around the ignition keyhole. There is metal part that is on FOB (key head) that has to make contact with that metal ring otherwise it will not crank at all....

If it is making contact then I would assume that the wire is broken that is connected to that that metal ring,

You would have to take the steering wheel colum cover off to check that there is a wire connected to that metal ring... If you are lucky it may have just come unplugged.

By the sounds of things thats where the problem is, since he was messing around in that area.
