Bonnet hinge sag

I have seen second gen commodore hinges sag to the point of cracking the windscreen when the bonnet is lifted, what is the preventative maintenance and rectification for this?

Lubricate the hinges. They get dry and the pin pops, causing the corner of the bonnet to hit the windscreen.

I do lube them and they are operating smooth but the bonnet sits a few millimetres low at the back which I thought was sag, I maybe able to adjust it up but don't want to band aid the problem, is new hinges the only fix?
Is it the pivot points?
What to look for in used hinges?

I was also wondering about this. The bonnet on my VS sits low at the back and people keep mentioning it to me but I don't know how to fix it.

I'd like to realign mine as its got a big gab between the guard on the left near the lights and a very small gap on the right again near the lights.
But don't know how to go about it.

Sounds like you are going to crack the screen soon, how is the height alignment between the guard and bonnet at the windscreen?

Whatever you do, be carful if you try to remove the bonnet and get to the hinge. The hinge will fly open and slap onto the front window...and crack it. Just to be safe slap a few bed pillows on the windscreen before you start just incase.

The height is fine it's just a gap on one side next to the headlights and the other side has a tiny gap is almost gonna touch.

You can adjust the mud gaurds a little to give the bonnet a more even gap on each side - I've done it several times to the VN's when re fitting bonnets.


As for the bonnet sagging at the rear next to the windscreen - the hinges are bent. Fit new hinges to make the bonnet sit level again.

While new hinges are best and easiest it may be worth playing with the old ones.

If you place something like a block of wood inside the parallelogram described by the hinge that will stop it from closing and you will be able to bend the part that the bonnet bolts to relative to that. Be careful closing the bonnet after any adjustment of course.

I'd probably just go ahead and fit the new hinges though.

There does not appear to be any bent parts in the hinge but then closed I can lift the left hand side next to the window, can actually rattle it up and down.

So, unless the bolts are loose, the pins are worn and you need (a) new hinge(s).
