Default Crank Angle Sensor-Fluctuating Idle speed?95 vs ecotec!

Does anyone know,if ,a faulty cas can cause idle speed to fluctuate dramatically, from say around 800 rpm steady,to around 1500rpm steady ,then sometimes as high as 2000rpm.Ive also had the orange engine light come on and off a few times, and also, sometimes there seems to be a miss under acceleration. For the first 5 or so minute when driving ,the engine seems to nearly cut right out under acceleration followed by misfiring, then everything seems to go ok!Any info would be much appreciated!Cheers ! Oh! forgot to mention that it has also backfired under the bonnet once or twice and that the dfi module was replaced about 15,000 km ago.

Check for error codes as the engine light coming on will have left one: Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
I'd also check all vacuum hoses around the throttle body - if one is leaking or is off it will cause these problems.

Ok ,thankyou, but just to add to my woes, now the engine has started to totally cut out for a split second, under mainly hard acceleration.

sounds like TPS to me. Go Check your codes, a monkey could do it with a paper clip.
THrottle position sensor, as the name suggests measures the position of the throttle and relays the info to the computer. When it croaks you get all kinds of wierd idle problems, jerky erratic acceleration and engine cuts out.... all classic symptoms, its code twenty something from memory.
