Hi guys. .
Ive just serviced my VR 5ltr and it never really had any oil leaks before hand. .
But now for some reason its leaking oil from the middle of the car. (Bell housing its dripping off).
Im thinking it maybe coming from the oil cooler lines but its not really gearbox oil.
Is there anything else back there it could be? Its to hot now to get back under but i will later.
Any help would be great! Thanks guys!
Yeah your screwed in short...
Im going to say its either a rear main seal which requires the engine to be removed in order to replace it as you have to undo/lift the crank out to change it or its your sump gasket thats leaking and running on the underside lip of the sump along the bolts, getting to the last bolt and dripping onto the k- frame and/or bell housing. The sump gasket is also a pain in the back side as you need to either remove the engine o drop the k-frame, so much of a muchness really...
Exactly this happened to me when I over filled my engine with oil.... Blew the seals out....
Fark! Hmm Whats the best fuel to burn this with? Brought the car last year as a lil project car and something to stuff around with but all its done lately is give me the shits! I didnt over fill the oil or anything? It just started after being up on ramps. #### i hate cars! Lol
Well firstly, take it off the ramps!
If the rear main is gone a little bit then you wont notice it leaking if your on level ground where as you will notice it more if the oil is banked up against it due to the nose of the car being higher then the rear.
But before you take it off the ramps, degrease the christ out of everything under there and then hose it off..
Let it dry over night on level ground and in the morning get an old sheet or bit of cardboard and lay it on the ground, drive over it and let our car get to running temp and check to see if the leak has come back.
The cardboard or what ever your using will give you an indication of weather or not its leaking.
If its leaking then you should put it back up on ramps and then have a good look to see where its coming from exactly. Take some pics and put them on here if your able, some of us might save you allot of time and or money if we can see what wrong with it.
You could also use a mirror attached to a flexible lead to check if the leak is coming from your rocker covers. Another possibility is that the leak is coming from the base of the distributor and dripping down the bell housing.
If you are lazy and cbf fixing your rear main seal, put heavier oil in it.
A rear main isnt really that hard to change if you have the right tools for it. Its just a matter of driveshaft off, trans off, torque converter and flexplate off, hook the old seal out, fit a new one and reassemble.
Thanks heaps for the info guys. I degreased the #### out of it and hosed it down.
I left it up on ramps for the night and tomorrow ill take it for a drive and see what happens.
I used magnatec oil 10w 40 i think it is. Should i drop it and use something else?
Oh and it only started leaking after i had serviced it and taken it for a drive.
It leaked then while on flat ground but as soon as i got it up on ramps again and degreased it then it stopped?
Any help at all would be great. You guys are good blokes for helping out.
Prob saved me from burning the car! Lol
Not comin from the filter or the oil filter adapter ?just an idea
Na mate it seems to be coming from the back somewhere.?
Ill crawl back under it today and hopefully will find where its coming from.(Ive just had an ankle reco so its a lil hard to crawl under but im doing my best! Lol).
Should i use thicker oil?
I used magnatec 10w 40? Should i change to something else?
And now ive washed the engine down the oil pressure light has come on?
Could this be because i got water in it?
Really getting to my wits end with this car!
Quick replys if possible. . Before i burn it. . Lol
+1
For a V8 you do, the seal is under the rear main cap. Imposible to access without taking it off, then if you dont have the tool to do it, have to lift/drop (depends if your doing it under the car or not) the crank to get to the other half of it.
Put some 20w-50 mineral in it (GTX2, Nulon, etc), with some stop leak if you want and see if that fixes the leak. That oil to me seams way to thin.
Might of got some water in the conector for the oil presure switch, let it dry out. But you will instantly know if it dosent have oil pressure next time you go to start it if its been sitting for a while. You will hear it.
I put some Full syth in the old V8 just before powercruise, didnt leak bad before that. After powercruise I would have 1-1.5L a week leak out, but that motor was coming out anyway so I just had the full syth in for POWA!
Btw I wish all I had to do was my rear main to get my car back on the road! Rear mains seem simple comepared to the shit I have to fix!

Im pretty sure its because i put that 10w 40 in that has caused the leak. Went to repco and got 20w50 so ill put that in tonight.
I also got another oil pressure switch also so if the light stays on once i put the new oil in ill just change the pressure switch.
Its leaking out the rear main when the oil gets hot but when it cools it doesnt leak.
Obviously because the oil is to thin and leaking when hot?
Is that right?
Oh, and thinker oil wont stop it leaking for long.
It gets pretty thin when it heats up...
take some pics for us to see....

Now i wished i gee never serviced it.! Was fine before this!
Ill take some pics tonight for ya when i get it back on ramps.
Ill take them before i burn the car! Lol. .
Ok so ive changed the oil to 20w 50 and took it for a drive. . The oil leak has stopped!
Dont no how long for tho.
But my oil pressure light is still flickering off an on? Could i have stuffed the switch above the oil filter by spraying it with water?
Also how hard is it to change? I brought a new one.
Give the connector time to dry out, the switch may come good.
I disconnected it and will leave it dry over night?
Ill get the air compressor tomorrow and give it a blow out and see what happens.
The engine doesnt make any noises like its got no oil pressure and the light never use to come out until i washed the engine.
5ltrs ay! Lol. .
Also are pod filters any good for the 5ltrs? Better on fuel performance etc?
Thanks guys!
Pod filters are gay.
When you were pouring the oil in did you happen to spill it?
Oil pressure switch is a c u next Tuesday of a job IMO.
Alternator has to come out and the fan if you don't like tight spots. Finding the right tool to undo it is hard. You might get lucky with vice grips. I'm pretty certain a 26mm deep socket will work.
Goodluck. They're good when they're running and a turd when they break. Atleast they're easy to fix.
Na didnt spill any oil when i put it in..
Yeah i kinda thought it would be a whore of a job when i unpluged it.
So pod filter wont do anything for performance or anything?
I have a custom memcal also.
Yeah you will have to remove the oil pressure switch my friend...lol.. You gotta dry it out...good chance it may mend on its own but they tend to stay rooted once they get wet...
