Yes, another oil thread. Get over it.
Guys, my VS has a rattley top end and a bit of piston slap. Only lasts for about 30 seconds at cold startup. Can still faintly hear the piston slap when warm sometimes if i listen closely and press my ear against the dashboard while driving really fast (kidding, relax) depending on the outside temperature and how long ive warmed the automobile for before driving off into the sunset.
Anyway, I hear Penrite mineral 20W-50 is good stuff for diminishing noises in ecotecs.
I also hear Shell Helix mineral HX3 20W-50 is a great oil too? Is it really a great oil though? Anyone had any experience with Shells 20W-50???
Out of the 2 oils, what would silence my rattley motor thats done over 150k's? I know oil won't fix it completely and please refrain from notifying me of this.
In other words, to you blokes that have owned a VS for ages and have done a million oil changes, what would you purchase if you were to walk into Autobarn right now after parking your VS with the rattley motor outside? Thanks in advance.
try a 15w 50, i use mobil 1, but whatever floats ya boat. there's plenty of stories around about this oil and that oil..
Try reading this is you want some more detail.
Yet another oil thread
I created that thread....
I've had my vs for nearly 3 years and done a fair few services, i use pen rite 15w50 synthetic and haven't had a problem with it so far
Been Using 15-60 Penrite Semi Syn extra 10. Great stuff. Best all round protection i say with the extra 10 in extreme heat. Run it in both the VX and VY, recomended for cars running 15-40- 15-50 and 20-50
I normally use 20w 50 in my 5ltr. Used 10w 40 and only went for a quick drive and it made the rear main leak. .
Got home an put 20w 50 in it and leak stopped!
So the 20w 50 is pretty good oil. Lol.
I use nulon 20W-50 High Kilometre Engine Oil.
But I have never had noises when first started and I have over three hunderd thousand k's on my VS, runs smooth![]()

Of course my oil is always topped up.
I've found that LiquiMoly Mos2 quiets a clattery motor. Whatever oil I use, I'll always add 300ml of this stuff in.
Are you sure it's piston slap and not just noisy lifters? I suggest doing a full engine oil flush with a proper flush additive. This may clear galleries of built up gunk that is restricting oil flow in the lifters until the oil warms and thins out.
The way I do a good flush is, add the additive to old oil, run till up to full operating temp for a good 10 minutes. Dump the oil. Fill up with a cheaper oil of the rccomended viscosity plus flush additive and go through the flush procedure again. Then drop the oil again and replace the filter with a new one and some good quality oil. I like Fuchs oil but basically you get what you pay for with oil. No brand is remarkably better than another for half the price.
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
Fairly certain it's piston slap. Its got that deep heavy metal on metal clanging sound until the motor warms up. Even then you can still faintly hear it on a quiet road gently accelerating.
Excellent advice mate, I'll try an oil flush and see how it goes. Thanks!
Think I'm going to go with Penrite 20w50.
The1, what's your problem mate?
Are you running stock tune? Could be to much timing, could be timing chain wear also.
Just stop replying mate, you ain't helping.
My Vr had the same noise on startup. I called it the Death Rattle. I'm pretty sure its just the result of an engine that's been hammered. Put whatever oil in it you want, i would recommend any 20w50 thats less than $30. At the end of the day the rattle is gonna get worse as time goes on and no amount of oil is gonna change it. Let her warm up nicely before you torture it...Buy yourself a rebuild kit and stick it in your shed for when something lets go.
My engine oil is always topped up, or at least I think it is. Every now and then it starts with the noise you have described (usually on cold mornings) once I top up the oil with a few hundred mils it goes away.
BTW my engine has never been rebuilt it has 258,000k's on it and it is revved to 6,000RPM regularly.
