VR V6 making a bad rattling noise :(
HHMMM well don't know what to make of it....but the motor is making this weird rattling noise
and sounds like its either coming from the front of the motor, near the crank shaft pulley and the aircon pump.
Sounds like something has come loose and is just rattling around, like a stone in a can sound if that helps.
The car still runs ok just has this god awfull rattle somewhere.
Any ideas as to what it might be would be muchly appreciated

Did it randomly go bad? or slowly over time?
The v6's have a problem with the timing chain tensioner turning to shit, so it could be that.... I know mine doesnt make any rattling noises since I put in a double row timing chain and got rid of the tensioner and balance shaft..

Remove the serpentine belt and run the engine - if the noise is gone, check each pulley in turn for roughness etc (after stopping engine!). If noise is still there with belt removed then it may well be the timing chain.

Cheers for the help, it turned out to be the harmonic balancer, put a new one on today and now its all good

What actually goes wrong with them that it causes it to make that noise? Ive got the same problem atm.
Harmonic balancer's made partly of rubber, when it splits somehow it makes that loud rattling noise. Easy to spot when it happens
did u chance the sensor behinf the harmonic balance at the same time, coz someti9mes wen pullin off the harmonic balancer u can damage teh sensor behind it
