To Cut a long story story I am trying to sell my VSII Ute and I took it to a differant joint closer to home for a RWC... Worst mistake ever.. Don't get me wrong I approve of safe RW cars but this guy has throw'n a doozie at me and I need advice.
It is a column auto and you have your back light (when head lights are on) and needle of the column to show what gear you are in (PRND12) but this mechanic won't give me a ticket until the car (unless in park) only lights up each gear it is in. for example if in 'Drive' only "D" back light shows up? It has never done this in the time I have had it and i reckon it is bull. There is nothing in the Max Ellery's manual on Column shift Auto. I have never owned an Auto Commodore before this one and I don't even know what the T-Bar ones do.
Also, the self canceller on the left hand does not cancel, I have replaced the stalk twice but no change, from reading around this forum it sounds like it is the cam inside the wheel? Any advice is welcome I have unitl Monday afternoon to sort out.
PLEASE HELP in trouble.
Can you post up a pic up what the prnd321 indicator part looks like? Im not too familiar with vs column shift autos. Do they just have a needle that moves to point to the respective shifter position?
Re: the auto indicator cancel, it sounds like the horn ring/indicator cancel part on the back of the steering wheel is worn out (assuming you dont have an air bag which has a different clockspring setup). The pic below is what you need to replace. I've put an arrow on one of the corners you can see is slightly worn and even this was enough for it to skip on past without cancelling automatically. You need to pull off the steering wheel to replace it.
Cheers

Sounds like bullshit to me. I doubt there even is individual bulbs behind the gear indicator. Take it somewhere else.
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
If its not the tab on the steering wheel, replace the indicator stalk.
There is a little tab on the end of the stalk that wears and wont self cancel.
As far as the gear selector, so long as it identifies each gear correctly (starts only in P or N) and is illuminated when the dash lights are on, that is fine.
Lighting up for each gear....rubbish. Floor shift doesn't do it.
Ask the tester to show you the ADR that specifies what he is asking for!
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
having a coluum shift myself i can vouch that the light thng is bullshit there is only 1 single bulb that lights up the whole selector. The needle points to each gear

Will keep you updated...
I've done quite a few column shift conversions to make wagons into 6 and 8 seaters. The backlight for the gear indicator only illuminates the whole cavity. This is the same for VN right through to VS.
The do not have the light embedded into the needle, in fact all i've encountered have a sold needle pointer which does not carry light.
Your RW guy is mistaken. It's not uncommon for them to mistake things they've come to expect from other brand cars that do things differently and sometimes model changes for certain cars these guy's assume it's the same.
I took an EB falcon in for a blue slip last year and was knocked back because (and i quote) "i'm missing a globe from each tail light)
I took the car back home, opened up the tail light housings to find that all the required globes were there and working. Turns out the EA model had an extra globe in them on each side and the guy assumed eb was the same.
They deal with heaps of different cars every day, you can't expect them to know everything about every car possible, only enthusiasts like some of us on here can say they know everything but only on a certain range and brand of car.
Take ur car to another RW guy, obviously there's nothing wrong with your ute if that's all he picked you for. Or you can get what I've said from Holden perhaps and then rub his face in it, depends on the kinda person you are!!! Me, I'm an arsehole, so you can imagine how i was recieved when i took in an eb tail light and an ea tail light and proceeded to ridicule my rw guy....... but hey, the missus was on the monthly, i'd copped enough on that day and needed an easy win.....
Long story short, the t5 globe sits in the middle of a white plastic holder that spreads the light over the entire shift patter panel with a clear top piece that sits ontop which is contained by the dash coloured outer trim ontop the column.
I have spare bits for the assy if you need to replace any of it.
HTH
I ended up getting the RWC, from the guy who was shitting me.. I showed a few things in the Genuine Holden Manual to him and a Max Ellery's Manual plus, a bit of BS and I got my RWC. The mechanic and I where a little more level headed second time around and he explained why he was being such a tight wade. I hate Victoria it really is a f'n nanny state.
