I have a VR BT1 V8 and i was wondering when i sit on 100kmh it sits on 2000 rpm, the spedo is 100 % accurate and unlike all the commodores i have owned in the past that sat on 1800rpm, i only got the car 4 months ago and i don't know if the diff ratio is stock. has anyone had experience with modified gear ratios? its not as if i am getting poor economy or anything i am just curious.
I have a video on how to find out ur diff gear ratio,
Check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y9iq...e_gdata_player
In summery, Jack up the rear end of the car with both wheels of the floor, mark the driveshaft and the tyre You choose to spin at the same horizontal points with some masking tape.
spin the wheel exactly 10 full rotations and count how many times your driveshaft does full rotations up to the 10th wheel rotation.
At 10 wheels spins the masking tape on both the tyre and the driveshaft should land in the same original postion as the starting point.
from there divide the total driveshaft rotation by 10 and that will be your diff gear ratio
In my case i got 39 rotations of the driveshaft to 10 wheel rotations, so 39/10 = 3.9
Usually there is a sticker on the diff housing that says what the ratio is but if in doubt, this is the best way to know exactly what gears you have.
Most of the times when diff gears are upgraded the old sticker isnt removed or replaced.
I hope my demonstration vid helped u out.
Cheers
Dave.

Just jack rear of the car up and have a look at the tag on rear of your diff.... It should be stamped into it
lock car in the gear thats 1:1 ration so if auto lock in 3rd if manual put in 4th and get up to 120km/h and if it does 3450rpm then its a 3.45:1 diff where if it does 3080rpm then its a 3.08: ratio, thats what ive been told to do and it does work, seems easier than jacking the car up
ill try that ^^
