Hey all,
I have a 96 VS Acclaim automatic and recently have encountered a low idling problem. It seems to idle fine in park or neutral, but when I change gear to reverse or drive, the car will idle very low causing it to shake and then jerk into gear or even stall. Even while at a complete stop the car will idle low. Has anyone had a similar problem, I couldn't find a post similar or maybe I didn't look hard enough.
Thanks

Mine was doing this untill I changed the inlet manifold gaskets and now it doesn't. Not saying this is your problem too but could be somewhere to start.

I need some statesman/ calais woodgrain for drivers side panel!!
Thanks Swe11l,
That's the problem I have, I'm not sure where to start at the moment. Was hoping to find people who have had the same problem, as yourself, to give me some ideas. It's at the point now where I'm willing to try what others have..
Could be a serious gearbox problem, mine done the same thing and would 'clunk' into gears, turns out the 1-2 solenoid was shot
Mine actually also 'clunks' into gears, more so when changing to drive...... :S
I had my car checked over by holdens and they didnt seem to see anything wrong with it..
but like I can go into gear from N or P and its fine.. but if I reversing and started to turn the wheel and put it in drive it would sometime stall.. I think the sudden clunk jerks it and causes the stalling.. but Id say its transmission/diff related..
it could also be your IAC motor as this is what does the same job as the idle screw on a carby - try taking it off and cleaning both it and the area it fits into as they tend to build up with carbon and cause idling probems as well
Thanks Guys,
Ill start with the cleaning of the throttle body and IAC and see how i go, hoping it fixes the low idle. But the gear 'clunk' change is still a concern
Cleaning will help if its badly clogged up to start with, but a good place to start. ( just don't mess with the TPS which is also on the throttle body ).
Few other long shots ... is your AC permanently on ? how is your power steering ? you said that turning the wheel makes it worse ...
