A mates car turned up today and it sounded like a spanner was floating around in the bell-housing....
Its a VR v6 Auto.
Any idea whats gone wrong with it?
:CAUTION: It may make you cry....

Well sounds like something it clipping metal to metal, but no clue what it is lol im sure someone else would have a idea.
it is very hard to tell from the video but you say its comming from the bell housing. id take off that lower cover plate and see if anything falls out, it almost sounds like a bolt is rattling around as it hits the flexplate.
Have you tried feeling where the nocking noise is coming from? Usually that's a easier way to find where it is
1993 VR CALAIS 5 SPEED MANUAL,Lowered all around on pedders, 20 inch G8s, Option audio front splits, option audio amps, sound stream subs, pace maker extractors, high flow cat, 2.5inch lukey cat back exhaust
Yeah its coming from what ever cover (has a little hole in it) is just bellow the bellhousing... I'll get him back over and have a look tomoz
The VN/VP used to crack flexplates pretty commonly but its not unheard of in VRs, chances are its done just that.
lose torque converter bolts
So I got him back over last night and unbolted the inspection plate (or what ever they call it in an auto) and could see nothing....
He started it for me when I was under it and it sounds like its coming from the torque converter?
Flex plate looked fine, either way it looks like my weekend will consist of splitting the box and engine and having a closer look![]()
the torque convertor is full of fluid... it wont have anything in it to "rattle" as you described...
Before you go crazy and split the engine from the tranny... are you sure it's not something in the sump?
You would be AMAZED how sounds can travel through an engine... like suggested by WPN38L ... feel, not listen for the noise... have you tried touching the sump?
Another idea, Use a big flat screwdriver as a stethoscope... pressing the handle onto your ear (so it closes your ear with that little flappy bit at the front of your ear hole)
just my 2c ... hope it helps!
Hey man I had this problem with my VS (the sound didn't work on your video but assuming it sounds like your car is possessed) a few months ago.
Everyone said, flex plate bolts, starter motor etc. Replaced the starter motor, complete waste of money there was nothing wrong with it.
Its likely to be the pump in the auto thats given up on life... I'd just sus a 2nd hand box thats what I did. Get it out asap as it's likely putting metal shavings through your trans and when you get it changed MAKE SURE THEY FLUSH THE RADIATOR AND TRANS LINES out completely or there will be metal shards in your new trans
good luck!

Good point nathanVS ... can check that easily too by droppin the auto pan... metal shaving/sludge on the magnetic pickup = stuffed pump in the tranny?
They were on I swear O_o
Edit: Hmm working now. sounds a bit different to what I had, mine was more consistent grinding.
