Hey, I've got a VS Commodore 1997 done 155000km, driven normally. It seems to be chewing fuel really bad and also the temp will keep going from 1/4 to 3/4 and slowly back to 1/4 then up again. When I got it I put $20 (normal) in and it did 100km, then $37 (prem) in and it did 90km, then $30 (normal) and it did 80km... Also the engine light comes on when fuel is low and that seems to be when the temp goes up and down as well. This morning it also didnt start straight away, turned the key and it took 3 secs to start turning over. It has a new battery.
Anyone out there know what might be happening and how I can fix this? I know it didnt start one weekend at all, not even turn over and i just played around with the leads and it decided to work then.

Have you ran error code checks?
I would speculate the problems are not related.
For the temperature my vs would vary between 1/4 and half all the time. Yours seems to be varying more than this. Possibly your thermostat is sticking?
You need to check fuel usage over a number of full tanks - small amounts are not representative. Re the 'no start', next time this happens check that the red flashing immobiliser light below the radio is not on - if it is on it means the immobiliser is still on and the car will not start till it goes out. It sometimes helps to press the unlock button on the key just before your turn it to start. If the car starts after you play with the cables then it indicates a bad connection, so you will need to tighten all connections and make sure there are no frayed cables. The engine light will leave a code so check for fault codes as PanthaVS suggests: Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
Good Luck and welcome to the forum.
