Hi
Got a power steering rack from the wreckers to replace a leaking one on my VS V8 for a roady and now when i drive it its fine cold but when it gets hot is noisy, belt seems fine, fluid levels fine and iv tryed to bleed it again (mechenic fitted it) just to make sure its fine.
Its 100% perfect cold and when you drive it for 15 minutes but once hot feels dougy and is noisy.
When you say the fluid level is fine, have you checked the level when the engine and steering fluid are hot ? When you say it gets noisy, what sort of noise (moan, grind, squeal, high pitch etc.), and when does it happen (all the time, going straight ahead, going around corners, when parking etc.)?
I've had similar things with earlier commodores (all the racks seem very similar with leaks and noises)
Give it a month of putting in power steer reconditioner additives, recheck levels while hot.
Also the bigger and wider the wheels you use, the harder the rack seems to have to work. Mine in the SS hated having 18's, half as noisy with 16's, no noise with 15's.
Heat is a major killer with holden racks (and auto's) excess heat from extractors, overworking with larger wheels. I'd be putting a tranny cooler inline with the return line.
The rack in my SS had two doses of lucas power steer stop leak and conditioner (say's on the bottle it's guranteed to only need one bottle to work.. mine took two, took most of the noise away, then i put one of those alloy finned rail type coolers from ebay onto the return line (i mounted it under the radiator on the support panel) routed the return line in the chassis rail up to the support panel, thru the cooler, and then back to the pump)
Seems to solved my issue with a loud groaning rack, hope this helps with your's
Cheers
Drew
Mate its fine totally perfect then after 15 20 mins driving around town its a labouring moan no squeal nothing high pitch and it gets heavy to steer. When you driving along the highway in a straight line i cant hear it much but if you went to do a u turn or turn left or right at a corner you can.
Iv checked fluid levels hot and its fine and if i let it sit for 5-10 minutes its fine again like nothings wrong. It is running 18 inch HSV GTS wheels which are heavy and i might try fitting some lighter 18s off the wifes car to see if it fixes it.
Its not leaking but i will try different wheels to see if it helps Drew thanks
Just incase anyone else has same probs it looks like its overheating as fluid is getting way to hot so its gotta be a crook line or its getting hot from heavy hsv alloys
Its nowhere near as bad with the other 18s fitted but its still slightly noisy so im going to try a spare pump to see if that fixes it
