Default Transmission fluid level. Same no matter what.

Iv had a search and can not find an answer. When i check my transmission fluid when cold its 1cm above the hot max mark. When i check it warm, its 1cm above the hot max mark and when i check it when its idling at operational temp its still the same. Does anyone know the cause of this as i have no idea. I was thinking about draining it and adding the amount it states in the book but i realized im flat broke so i can not aford fluid and the transmission service kit.

    Anyone had a similar problem?

It is clearly overfilled, and is probably the reason why it doesn't change. Why don't you just drain some from the transmission cooler and check it again? Once you get it into the normal region you might get a better idea if something is wrong.

Never thought to do that to be honest. The only transmission problems i have is the TC locking and unlocking when ever it pleases.

So i disconnected the tranny line at the cooler and ran it into a bucket. Turned the car on untill no more fluid would flow out, Only 5.5Ls came out. Thats running it through the gears too. I no longer have gears.

You won't be able to select gears if there's no fluid!

I should have been clearer, I would have drained the contents of the cooler, done it all back up and checked the level. Then done the same again if it was still high. If you haven't got the cash for more fluid, you will have to make a judgement call on whether the fluid is clean enough to put back in.

Yea i know that, what i was pointing out, after a full drain only 5.5 came out, not the 9L from a full drain. Im asuming its a full drain unless its 700ml over full.

You'll never drain the whole lot that way anyway, definitely less than the service refill. There will still be a lot of fluid in the TC and in the pan.

The fluid will always look dark in a bucket, and as long as it looks red on your finger it shouldn't be burnt. However, it is the dust and crap in the bucket that I would be more concerned with.

Its a clean bucket. I drained out the fluid that way. 5.5L came out. 4.8L went back in, still reads over the hot max indicator, but runs a shit tonne better.

    1) overfilling the transmission AT ALL causes frothing in the oil pump, and loss of pressure to the servos
    2) you're better off being a tiny bit under than a tiny bit over
    3) draining the system will never completely empty the valve body, servos, solenoids, oil pump or torque converter
    4) the only way to completely refresh the system is to disconnect from the oil cooler, and run the outgoing hose into a bucket, and submerge the incoming hose in a 20 litre drum of brand new dex3 ^_^

Well, I've learnt something. I assumed that the pump only worked in one direction, so that if you disconnect the lines,
you no longer have fluid circulation, and you would only get oil pumped out, not sucked back in.

Before you check the fluid level, move the transmission lever through all the gears slowly from P to R and then back again.

I did all that. After a lengthy drive last night, after putting 4.8L in, sat below the hot min by the end of the night and frothing was present. Added another 200ml and seemed to be alright. So in saying that, it must of been 500ml over full, but is that enough to cause a problem?
