Hi
We have a 5 speed VS commodore with the Getrag 5 speed box, we had the duel mass clutch replaced with a kit around 3 months ago, so next time a clutch is needed it will be an easier fix, anyhow, there's now a loud whirring noise when the car is idling in neutral, if I put my foot on the clutch it goes away, we took the car back under warranty thinking it's a thrust bearing in the clutch, we were told they would remove the gearbox to check this as they were of the same opinion, but they didn't, apparently they took the car to the clutch place and were told it's a gearbox bearing , anyone have an idea which bearing it could be? anyone had a similar drama with a gearbox bearing or would you guys still suggest the thrust bearing at fault?
Also, any reliable gearbox places in Adelaide? prefer north of the city thanks..
Thanks in advance,
Mick
I call bullshit to be honest. Sounds 100% like a thrust bearing noise, like the fork ball thing wasn't wount out so the bearing isn't touching the plate.
I dont know of any gearbox bearing noises that happen with the car idling in neutral, that go away when the clutch is pushed in.
Chase your warranty fix, coz imo they just don't want to have to pull the gearbox again.
I did the same thing with my t5, new clutch put it all back together had the whirring, sometimes grinding noise that went away when i put my foot on the clutch, it cost me nothing to fix i just had to pull it out and unscrew this ball thing under the clutch fork.
It could be the input shaft bearing - in neutral with the clutch NOT pushed in, the only part of the gearbox that is spinning is the input shaft.....once you push the clutch in, the input shaft stops spinning.
So my bet is that it is this bearing that is noisy.....it's also the most common one to fail as it carries a lot of load.

ok, so i take it you converted from the dual mass to the single mass flywheel?
are you aware that the dual mass setup was to aid in making these cars drive smoother, transfer less noise and vibrations?
Therefore as soon as you ditch the dual mass you will feel more vibes and hear more noises. Almost every getrag equipped VS ive come across (which has been changed to earlier kit) was just as noisey and rough as the T5 gearboxes they replaced.
Ive replaced a thrust bearing, in almost exact circumstances as yours, didnt make a difference. And this all happened after the dual mass delete.
I may be wrong in your case, but imo you're experiencing the effects of losing the dampening of the dual mass
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!

Thanks guys,
It's gradually got noisier, when it was first converted it was pretty quiet, the mechanic took it for a test drive and also agreed there was a problem with it, so I'm thinking he's at least correct with his diagnosis, I'm off to a couple of gearbox and clutch places today so I'll see what they say, Cheers
