Hi guys. . Im starting to think i should have left my bt1 5ltr in the shed!
But anyways here goes my new problem!
Yesterday after having the car up on ramps it seemed to have developed an exhaust leak. So i took it to my mechanic to put it on the hoist and it turned out all exhaust clamps were fine.
It sounds like this ticking/tapping noise is coming from the bellhousing. It even has my mechanic stumped.
The noise is really noticeable when the car warms up and doesnt effect the car at all but i really want to find out what this is? Its just started all of the sudden.
Please guys any help would be great.
Thanks.
When was the last time you changed your oil (maybe low oil pressure), could be a lifter or the lose fly wheel?

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
Change oil last week. Oil pressure is good. It only happens when warm and really sounds like an exhaust leak from inside the bell housing.
I no it cant be that but yeah its what it sounds like.
Fly wheel/torque converter bolts? Pull the cover off and have a look around.

Will do that first thing in the morning. Its just happened all of the sudden?
Really doing my head in!
Does it still make the noise when you give it a slight rev?
Yeah it does. Doesnt really get louder but still makes the same noise just faster.
Mechanic said it def wasnt a bearing or anything like that.
It really had even him stumped. And it just started all of the sudden and only is really noticeable when it warms up.?
cracked drive plate maybe or torque convertor bolts working loose
What is the best way to check this? Undo that plate that goes between the back of the engine and front of the gear box?
As i said before it only does it when it warms up and only started after i put it up on ramps?
The noise is really hard to explain. The car is running fine apart from this.?
And actually the noise started after i had tightened all the sump bolts and gearbox pan bolts up because they were all loose!
Could this have had anything to do with it?
not easy to get to the plate to crank bolts with removing the gearbox , check your torque convertor bolts first , maybe your inspection cover is scrapping on the ring gear or the rear of the crank flange , remove the cover and inspect for marks and shiny spots
No worries ill have a look in the morning.
I thought maybe because i had tightened the 2larger bolts up at the back of the sump for some stupid reason that caused it or something. Or i had knocked something under there. Lol i dunno im grasping at straws i guess. It just seems so strange because it was fine before putting it on ramps. It just seems to be one thing after the other!
Mate my VR does the same thing, and so does a heap of other people. It's sticky lifters or injectors. Common problem

Yeah na its def coming from the bottom at the back man. Its sort of like "pop pop pop" sound.
If i Hadnt checked all exhaust bolts myself id say it was that. It increases with engine revs etc but yeah.
The thing that gets me is that it only does it when it warms up. When its cold its fine?
Yep, thats the same as mine. Sounds louder near the bell housing. I've had mechanics, trans specialists and exhaust shops to suss it out for me, they all said Lifters and/or injectors.
I've have new extractors + Y piece including gaskets installed on my car so it's not them. The only thing I haven't replaced is the cat converter, which i doubt is making a ticking noise but I could be wrong.
Im not crazy then! Lol. .
I had a high flow cat installed yesterday whilst it was on the hoist.
And no difference?
How did yours start?
I just Dont understand how it can be lifters or injectors when its def sounds like its coming from in the bell housing?
Its the most annoying thing ever!
Not really sure what i done but ive fixed it?
I took that plate off and had a look at the torque converter and it all looks fine?
So i just loosened off the sump bolts a tad and the 2 gearbox pan bolts(i had tightened these before this started) took it for a drive and its fine! No noise at all?
I know it's a old thread but mine does this aswell, really does my head in too. Checked all exhaust bolts and exhaust manifold but still there, going to mechanic next week for another check. Mines a manual did it before the clutch change aswell, with new clutch in still doing it. Otherwise car still pulls hard, just fustrating that i cannot find the problem. But mines a VZ SS.
mine has the same noise in the vr.can you only hear it when you are in the car.if you lift the bonnet can you still here it or is it gone.A commodore mechanic told me the fast pop pop pop sound was the fuel regulator vibrating through the firewall
my VR 5ltr, has an annoying Ticking noise that changes speeds with the revs, Can only hear it in the car while driving, cant hear it under the bonnet reving in netutal...
could this be the fuel reg vibrating? and if so how do u fix that lol
its definatly a fast ticking noise and its driving me insane lol
