Default Oil light flickering...Oil Pressure Switch? Vr-Vs

My oil light is flickering on and off im my vr v8, so I decided to take it out and blow it with compressed air, drop the oil and filter in case I got water in it some how, fit the switch back up and put new oil in it plus a new filter and it's still coming on?

My mates VS v6 is here (and has been for 12 months) so I took that the pressure switch of that on put it on mine to see if it made any difference and it hasn't... It still flickers....

I did change the pump so maybe it has something to do with that but I removed the oil filler cap off the rocker cover and when I give the engine a blip plenty of oil comes out of the push rods?

So im assuming the pump is actually working fine?

It only seems to come on when its at idle?

Any ideas as to whats doing?

It's at idle that oil pressure will be at it's lowest....it's probably 3-4psi at idle which may not be enough to reach the rockers but when you give it a rev the psi rises and increases the flow. Drop in pressure could be for many reasons but you have to start with known factors - how many K's on the engine - does it burn oil - what grade of oil.
It could be anything from a blocked/loose/damaged oil pickup to worn bearings which will be most likely with a high K's motor.

You should have atleast 15-20psi at idle. The light comes on at around 6psi. As soon as the revs pick up it should read about 50psi.

Get an oil gauge and check it!

Wrong. the 304 has a notoriously low pressure idle. Mine is 5 PSI, and can be lower. The repair manual states approx 5PSI at idle and 35 PSI minimum at 2000RPM.

15-20 PSI on cold idle maybe, Not hot.

Yeah well I placed a gauge on it today and it reads 0 psi at idle and 35psi at about 2500-3000 RPM then drops back to 0psi when I let it off....

Good chance the pump needs to be replaced...

Which is sh!t coz I replaced this pump on Monday....GRRRRR

How big was the job of changing the pump dude? I reckon mine is stuffed.
Been putting the job off because im not sure how hard it is to do it?

    Its really easy..

You just need to disconnect your battery, undo your alternator and remove it, remove the oil filter, un-clip your oil pressure switch then you just crack the 4 x 12mm bolts holding it into the block and then give the oil pump a tap with the handle of a hammer and it will fall out.

Once you have it out you can undo the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold the units gears in place. These little suckers are what cause bad oil pressure, so have a look for any wear on the inner pump housing and on the cogs. If its warn badly then the oil pressure is compromised.

If you intend to use the gears again, before you remove them (careful here they just fall out) just clean and degrease the tops of them and make a mark with a texta or paint pen on the two parts of the cogs that meet so when you put them back in they meet back up with the area they have worn into.

Now Id recommend just forking out the coin and buying a new pump.

If you do this is how you install it.

Get a set of gasket's for the ump and obviously make sure the block is degreased and clean.

You will need to prime the pump, so make sure you remove the 10mm bolts and then cram in HEAPS AND FARKN HEAPS of grease or Vasso in and around the gears.....

Now keep the unit in 2 pieces and apply the gasket to the back of the unit, you might have noticed one of the gears has a key way on it which is spun by the cam, this if not lined up straight will pop one of the gears out slightly, just apply a small amount of pressure while tuning the gear with your finger tips and you will feel it go in.

Apply the other gasket and put gear cover on and bolt it back up.

I filled my oil filter up with oil and screwed it back on, this will also help with the priming.

    All done... Zoom Zoom time.....

PS....I had passengers side wheel jacked up so I could lay under the car and place the pump on. I found it easier to hold and line up...
