Things I would do are: disconnect battery for 30 mins to reset ECU....check trans fluid level.....check fluid colour and smell - if brown and burnt smelling replace. Check the trans fuse (not sure which one in a V8).
Hopefully it's just a solenoid or something simple.

Sometimes..., resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery can fix strange electronic problems. Your transmission is controlled by the ECU. This cost nothing, can do no damage and takes little time to do.
It's a bit like when your PC locks up or doersn't load up properly...you turn it off, wait a few mins and reboot - of course your ECU isn't a PC but they are similar. But try it anyway, and also the other suggestions especially the trans oil colour.
    Good Luck.

hey mate disconnected the battery to reset the ecu like you said and it fixed the proble thanks heaps for the adice
just wondering what would have caused it in the first and could it happen again
also had the transmission fluid changed and new filter put in about 3000 kms ago
    thanks again

There is no guarantee the code will not come back unfortunately. Last time I had a trans related code it went away after disconnecting the battery, then re-appeared about a week later - that was a code 82 which is one of the solenoids in the trans. A few weeks more and it was on all the time as well as Limp Home Mode. Yours could be similar and from your description of the fault it could be as simple as the solenoid that controls the TQ lockup.
What I'd do is drive it normally and see if it comes back - if it doesn't log the code in the next 6 weeks or so then I'd say it was something very simple like a bit of dirt in the valve body etc, but if the code comes back in the next few days then you will need to do some more investigation. I'd also check the trans oil colour just to give you an indication of the general condition of the trans - it should be pink/red and smell oily. IF brown it suggests the trans has been slipping and/or the trans is nearing the end of it's life. However, to contradict the last sentence, when your trans gave the code 85 it would have been slipping quite a bit, and this heats/cooks the oil....so really diagnosing problems is pretty near impossible.
But check the oil, change it again if brown and keep fingers crossed. If you trust the person who did the last trans service then ask them for advice as well. Good Luck.
