    Default Fuel economy

I bought a vr with 100 thou on the clock, im pushing to get 400k's to a tank. im not giving it much of a hard time at all. its completly standard v6 auto. economy mode and everything lol
    ive done;
    fuel, oil and air filter
    new oil
    coolant flush
5 of the 6 plugs got replaced (lol)
    tires are always 38psi

I was expecting to get atleast 500. I know i could be forever pouring money into it. But im just wondering if there is anything that causes these cars to be thirsty. i cant think of much else to replace. im not lookign to squeeze every last km. Just big issues. Are there any sensors that could play up? that are cheap to fix. otherwise ill just put up with it. its only supposed to be my daily hack lol

the only problem i know of is the fuel breathers have perished near the filler neck.

I find I get better/worse fuel economy based on what petrol I use. Travelling from my home to Sydney over the last couple of weeks (300 km/s round trip), my fuel consumption was about 1/3 of a tank for Standard Unleaded (United) and 1/4 of a tank (Yes.. A quarter) for Premium 98 from Caltex.

could it also be the type of driving you do?
leadfoot it up to speed? (i doubt it but anyway)
do you drive mainly in the city or stop start traffic at lowerish kmh

i actually found in my car (manual v6) that if i babied it too much the fuel economy went up (about 1L per 100) then if i drove it more "normal"
currently getting 8L per 100km out of a tank, but thats mainly freeway driving at 80 or 100
however it went up to probably 9-10l when i was driving in the city with work.
how about we make the pedals out of sticky rubber and the shoes with steel spikes. at least my shins would like that

cheers for the replies, i am not not heavy footed in it much at all, its mostly 80 or 100kmh driving with no stopping to get to work and back, so thats why im so confused. i thought they would be so much better. my vs 5 litre is the same if not better and its got diff gears and all the bs. Ill check the fualt codes, how much is an oxy plug worth?

and yeah the fuel breathers have kinda perished

Its possible to get half decent fuel economy out of these cars.Ive found that theres a fair bit of fuel economy to be gained just from adjusting the settings in the memcals "tune" to suit higher octane fuel. I get excellent fuel economy from my VSV6, I only use 98 octane fuels,I get around 300 k's on the highway on around $20 worth of 98,this is whilst driving normally at 105-110 kp/h, including overtaking etc. I also use cruise control when I can on highway runs.
It doesnt cost very much to buy the hardware you need to access and change the memcal settings yourself, delcohacking is an excellent website to get you started if you are interested in learning how to do this stuff..Theres a few different people on here who do these adjustments or "tunes" to the memcal settings, its mostly the ignition timing tables that need to be changed, and sometimes the auto trans settings if its auto to get it shifting quicker and firmer, but that pretty much all that needs to be done to gain a bit more responsiveness under acceleration and better fuel economy. I do the odd VS V6 tune for different people, I dont really sell them like on ebay or anything like that as I can never get hold of spare memcals, and the wreckers around here want a fortune for them.
Also keeping other things serviced makes a huge difference.I reckon the 3 ignition coils, and the fuel injectors, and oxygen sensors should be replaced probably around every 100,000 to 150,000 k's or so, otherwise as they get old they start to slowly loose their performance and this causes the car to slowly get worse fuel economy etc.
And then theres the usual stuff, spark plugs and sparkplug leads, engine oil and oil filter, air filter and fuel filter, and (if automatic trans), the auto trans filter and fluid.Keeping all these serviced regularly will help to keep fuel and running costs down.Keeping the tyres at their maximum recommended pressures and keeping weight out of the car(toolboxes etc) will also help.

O2 sensors are good for about 70,000kms and lose performace after that. As stated above 100,000kms is a good yard stick to repalce sensores that work hard every time the car is on the road.

Thats the CAS, temp and O2. DFI unit and coils can help too if they have started to lose their zap.

its only done 115 thousand. I wouldnt go into it in as far as fiddling with the memcal, my luck with all that is never good, good at pulling shit apart and not putting it back together. There isnt any weight in the car at all, i use cruise control aswell. I might just check the codes and replace the oxy, as heaps of people seem to have problems with the oxy

I Could push our old VR to 700Kms a tank (63L) lol.
But replace the 6th Plug, and replace the leads if you have not done so already.
    Run injector cleaner through.
And as said replace the oxy sensors. Even though i have no clue how old mine were lol
Check all the hoses etc. also check the fuel breather hoses as they do fall apart and you could be splashing fuel around lol

stop start traffic will help guzzle juice, open road driving eases i a bit but for open road driving go to premium fuel and the economy is great, i used to drive my old vs wagon loaded with work gear and all sorts of crap from Geelong to Midura on less than half a tank. it was unreal the difference between trips to around town

my VR was good on fuel when i bought it around 500ish kms to a tank , then slowly got worse. Fitted new plugs, leads, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump and injectors and has improved it ten-fold.
With the long range tank now i get around 750 - 800 around town and over 1000kms in the country
