lol, been a while since i've used the forums guys... i was formally a VK poster, but that was defo some time ago nowrighto getting to the problem:
Have now got a VS II Statesman (5L) bloody awsome car, i think maybe a bit heavier than the commy's though the 5L just doesnt seem to have the same punch in the luxobarge.
1. Installed a brand new DVD Head unit on sat, after some wiring issues (thank god for wiring diagrams), I got it in and working... i usually do but this was a job, how many wires do u need in the back of your radio lol..
2. Installed an Aftermarket LED redlight dash mounted Tacho (running the signal wire from the brown test wire located in the passenger side engine bay near the strut.
Now u might need to know as u read further... that reading the instructions for wiring the tacho after a few coldies over grand final weekend.. my brain decided the best possible place to hook into power, ground, and accesories, for the tacho wiring, would be straight off the ignition barrel. guess it was easier than extending wires or adding fuses. one new wire through the firewall was plenty for me lol.. beer = bad.
3. sunday arvo after its all wired up, i decide rightio time to give the girl a kick in the guts and get the tacho set up, making sure it all works. turn the key, car kicks over, rpm on tacho, all going awsome... oh and even the head unit was doofing away. WOO! awsome, lets take her for a spin..
4. Being auto, hit the big R and proceed to back down the driveway, get to the end of the driveway.. car stalls, engine winds but wont fire.
OK..... so I push the bitch back up the driveway (heavy mother F*****) and give her a few turns.. ba bawm... engine winds continuously but wont fire. shitting myself cause me daughter is due back at her mums house tomorrow and thats the only way shes gettin there. last thing i wanna do is piss that bitch off!! so yeah any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've been reading posts about crank angle sensor, dissy, ignition problems, but i cant seem to pinpoint it and last time i looked its been dark and raining for like 6 hours lol... so tomorrow morning is the day. Could this problem be related to an immobiliser issue (considering if I was a theif id b taken the stereo and then screwing with the wiring on the ignition barrel)... strange for it to just stall after running for like 20 - 30mins sitting still while i was playing with the tacho... and then WILL NOT restart (engine turns, no fire) havnt checked spark etc yet, can hear noise in the tank for the fuel pump priming when key is on reds, although have not tried taking F Pump fuse out and replacing to reset the system (immobilisers disable fuel pump if tampered with??)... not even sure where to start, and I've got about 4 hours in the morning to fix this shit b4 the bitch calls DOCS LOL! HELP!
My Car is my OTHER child
I should also mention I in no way condone drink driving, i had a desoand he turned into a devod lol... poor blokes been wanting a drive of the 5L for like a year, gets in the drivers seat and she decides she's had enough at the end of the driveway... see theres the problem right there, shes designed for one pilot only!

Make sure ALL your connections on ur battery are tight,
I had a problem where the car would turn over but not start and it was simply fixed by tightening all the bolts on the battery terminals, and follow the earth wires and make sure they are tight at the other end aswell.
ur battery might be drained from working on the car with the doors open etc.
did you have you battery disconnected while you were doing all the wiring
If in doubt......FLOOR IT!!!
come to think of it, i think i completely forgot to disconnect the battery while i was doing the work... do u think this may have cause a problem? funny thing is it was sitting in the driveway in park with the engine running for like 20mins. turned the key off, walked inside, came back out about 30mins later to take her for a spin, and as soon as she was in reverse it decided to stall halfway down the driveway and that was all she wrote.. doesnt look like ive got any spark, plenty of fuel. i cut the brown wire on the back of the ignition barrel, so i spliced and soldered it... could this have anything to do with it?
My Car is my OTHER child
Did you double check all the insulation if the wires you cut and spliced? there might be a short if anything is touching etc?
should all be fine.. well this ones got me scratching my head... love the luxobarge, just doesnt love 90's technology mixed with nows technology... hmmm... this might be an auot elec job.. bugger aye. this could be a few things as far as i can tell... fuel pump ive just replaced not long ago... so could be crank angle sensor (they usually die together)... which is in the dissy i think?... harmonic bla bla or something its called... it was raining all day when i was working on it.. so maybe water got into something it shouldnt have... (ECU etc) should of dried out by now though, sunny all day... something ive stuffed with with the ignition barrel.. who knows could b up for a new ignition modual considering i may have shorted it. I cant check engine codes cause i dont have the eqiptment... gunna have to go get this one sorted i think... bugger that train to work tomoz isnt looking good.

oh and also... i blew a radio fuse by accident when i was installing it... i think i used a donor ABS fuse to power it when it was installed. Come to think of it, the car stopped on me mate when he touched the brakes (ABS fuse under dash pulled out)... the ABS fuse has since been replaced though and its still not going... does anyone know what the hell is going on?? haha cause i dont.. too complicated for me this one.

AND - the immobiliser seems to be working correctly... there isnt the usual bypass switch in the glovebox near the boot button... so i cant test that. is it located somewhere else in the VS II 97 5L statesmans? or is it just not existant? as far as i knew it should have been there.. there was one in my old VR commy

Hey mate
I had a similar problem in my VS 5l stato only a few weeks ago. started the car after work, talking to the missus on the phone and the car just cut out. cranked over but wouldn't start. I pulled a lead off and it didn't have any spark. straight away I thought ignition module or the coil. My mate has a tilt tray so I got him to bring a coil and module with him. I tried the ignition module, no luck. so we loaded it up and trucked it home. when I got home I tried the coil, still no spark. I had no spark from the coil going to the dizzy. I pulled out the volt meter and checked everything, looked like the Hall effect sensor wasnt sending a signal. I rang my mate and he said the coil was definatly good cause it was off his old mans car and the ignition module was off his VN that had been sitting in the shed for a few months. So I thought it would definatly be the dizzy. $150 later, I dropped a new dizzy in it......still no spark.
After much stuffing around and head scratching I was moving the ignition module and I noticed that it sparked when I touched it on the guard.....it turns out it was earthing out. I dug up another module I had in the shed......and BINGO!!!! started first pop. set the timing and she goes like a new one.
Its strange that my mates one had shat itself, just unlucky I guess. But I reckon the ignition module is probably the first place you should be looking. See if you can borrow one off someone whos car is RUNNING.

Ignition module for sure worse case try hitting it they fail due to dodgy connectors etc
