g'day y'all, im just wondering what i would use to clean the rockers and rocker cover?
clean them with degreaser or something?
because mine look pretty bloody shocking lol
anyhoo cheers.
Are you removing the rockers?
Clean them with kero or degreaser and/or brake clean.
Take the rockers out and soak em in degreaser in a bucket.
yep, saw em and it doesn't look nice lol
and also i cant get the drivers side rocker cover off, because of one bolt up the back, how would i get the bastard?
and another quick question, the torque specs for the rockers are 37-44nm?
I was wondering whether to clean the rockers themselves or not when I had my rocker covers off... anyone notice any difference? or just a good idea if you have the time?

Gregorys says Rocker arm retaining bolts - first stage 11-19Nm - second stage plus 87deg to 93deg.
Rocker covers are 7-11Nm.
Cleaning the rockers will not really achieve much except they look cleaner although you really cannot see them! I'd be very careful to plug all the oil drain holes in the head before removing the rockers to stop the crap draining down to the sump - if gets in there it will block the oil pickup strainer real quick. Good Luck.

I found throttle body and carby cleaner worked a treat. You can soak the rockers in it and use it with a paint brush and some rag for the covers. Why not paint the covers while they are off?
And with the drivers side cover, you need to bend the top radiator hose right away, and undo the hose thingy that connects to the brake thingy, to use the technical terms lol. Then it should come out with a little persuasion.
so do i chuck some oil over the push rods, rockers and valve springs before they go back in?
+1 for throttle body cleaner, worked great getting the crap off the inside of my rocker covers![]()

The drivers side is a pain in the arse to remove but you shouldn't have to take anything else off or apart to do it.

I need some statesman/ calais woodgrain for drivers side panel!!
When you reassemble lube everything that moves with friction i.e. valve stem tips, rocker tips, push rod ball and pushrod seat in the rocker arm. Use a molybdenum (moly) grease.
To be honest though if your rockers/inside rocker covers are this bad id be more worried about the cleanliness in the rest of your motor. Sound like a pretty poor service history interval sorry.

yes, to say the least, so is it worth cleaning em?
Well its certainly not going to hurt, but if the rest of the motor is the same its not going to help a great deal. Also factor in that the stock rocker mounting bolts are a torque to yield, and theoretically are a single use.
Should also add to my list above that after cleaning the rocker arms with any solvent degreaser etc that this will also flush out the oil in the rocker needle bearings. Make sure you try to pump plenty of oil back into the rollers before refitting.

what an astronomical waste of time! LOL. but i suppose if you are bored...
could always go to the wreckers (pickapart for example)
buy a set of rocker covers. take your time etc cleaning them/painting them
put them on car.
use old rockers for something like a into a set of pots for small plants like herbs for your old lady.
cheap present, which could be a bit of fun aswell
sorry didnt read the thread
