Hello mates,
My VS Wagon has run a pair of Monroe front shock absorbers since new and needs replacement now. So is the outer tie rod end on the passenger side. The replacement of those needs spring compressor too.
I am in balance of comfort and handling so what would be the best choice for the shocks' brand? So with the tie rod end and the spring compressor? Of course the cheaper the better for me.
Any ideas?
Well if you wanted to lower it a bit you could go king spring 'lowered' which will give you just over 365mm centre to guard height, your run of the mill monroe gt gas are manufactured to suit the spring rate of the king spring, so it will give you a good comfy combo. KYB is also another good choice for the budget you would be aiming for.
If you have a rattle gun and are going to a lowered spring then you wont need a spring compressor either. Otherwise instead of buying spring compressors you could take the spring shock assembly to a local mechanic to dissasemble and re-assemble which shouldnt take up much of his time, 15mins maybe.
tie-rods just any run of the mill stuff from like a bursons will do.
I have put BOGE Struts on the front of my VS, with FE2 springs and couldn't be happier with them. BOGE are original equipment on Porsches and Benzs, and were only about $40 dearer than Monroes. Got them from Wholesale Suspension. I think I got my spring compressors from Supercheap for about $20.
Check on Ebay for prices if you are not in a hurry. Cheapest way to buy is go to a wrecker - Brisbane based in your case - and get two complete front strut spring assemblies - look for a pair that look like they've been replaced recently. That way there is less hassle fitting them and no spring compressor needed. The tierod end maybe from SuperCheap who are cheaper than Burson unless you get a trade price. I'd go for regular springs and shocks unless you plan on doing the rear as well.

Yet but are BOGE designed for commodores and match the spring rate.
I had the KYB's front and rear stock replacement they were a little too firm for my liking.
Are the BOGE hydraulic oil shocks or gas ?
What does the life time replacement warranty mean ? Unconditional ?
Please provide links.
From memory they came in 2 basic setups, one for normal to slightly lowered suspension (I have this one), and another for more aggresively lowered setups. I believe they are hydraulic and not gas, but a quick call to Wholesale Suspensions (I found them great to deal with) can answer it in more detail than me and can explain the warranty - can't find much on the web in English.
I have had a VS V6 on original struts (comfortable but average performance), VS V8 on Pedders (can't really compare because the struts had completely let go internally, and sway bar mounts had cracked @ about 100,000Km), VS V8 on Coilovers (super low, rode like a go-kart, and scrapped my exhaust on everything) and now a VS V8 on BOGE (comfortable great ride, but still has performance handling). I can't compare to Monroes or KYB because I haven't tried them, but can recommend BOGE with either the standard height or a 30mm lowered spring.
I got pedders front springs and shocks. They are notoriously stiff. I think they advertise that their gear is somthing like 30% stifer then stock. But with the weight of the 5ltr, it more then overcomes that nicely.
