Hi Gents,
Ive just picked up a VR Calais 5.0 (duel fuel) and ive noticed that once the car has been driven for a while the oil light tends to flicker once i am stoped on idle.
It tends to happen on both fuel and gas and if i keep the revs up a little the light dissapears. Also if i go from drive to reverse the light will stay on for a few seconds and then begin flickering again untill i take off.
The previous owner had done a service on it less than 5000km ago. Any ideas?
Maybe try changing the oil pressure switch as a first step?
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!

Yeah it could be a bit of water in your oil, have you cleaned the engine bay with a high pressure hose lately?
I have had this happen to me a few times and for a few different reasons...
* water/degreaser in the oil
* Thin grade of oil
* Oil pressure switch faulty (doubt its this one)
* Oil pump has shit the tin and needs replacing (most likely this and I have a how to: on it)
* Simply the oil level is too low
Also if you wanted to test if its a faulty switch and don't want to fork out the coin for a new one just too find out it isnt the issue, use a mates oil pressure switch if they drive a VR/VS V8 or V6....They are all the same
Just thinking here.... so as the oil get hotter it will loose viscosity and become thinner and the pressure drops. As already mentioned the first thing I would check is the oil level which I assume you have already done. I don't think that there is any way to check the grade of oil in the engine. As the first step I would change the oil and replace with the recommended grade and go from there.

The oil pick up in these can also get blocked although harder to check than those items listed above. So probably start with those first.
I would put an oil pressure gague on to accuratly measure the oil pressure. It it reads fine then it's the switch.
If it reads low, could be any of the things listed above.
I did see a Statesman once where the oil pickup was blocked (they are way too small) this starved the engine, siezed the cam causing the end to snap off just behind the timing gear!

could even be bottom end ready to spit the dummy, exessive bearing wear, oil pump releif spring too soft, cam lobes worn, just too many things too look at
The mechanic flushed the oil out and run diesal and petrol through the motor to clean out all the gunk. This has worked and i havent seen the light come on for a few weeks. Today however i went to overtake someone and as the car geared down and it went into high rpm the light came on and stayed on for about 5 seconds and then dissapeared. It then runs fine untill i kick it down and it jumps into a high rpm. Any ideas?
Oil pump on the way out ?
After your mechanic did his magic flush, did he check the oil pressure using a proper gauge?
This should be a given seeing as the car was being checked for an oil pressure issue.
Until a proper oil pressure test is done, you are just guessing.
PS. What is the odometer reading?
