Default my vr struggles to want to start

    hi
just bought this car. goes really well once she's kicked over but she struggles to want to. The best way seems to be that i turn it over for a few seconds then gently pump her. Sometimes this works ok especially when she's hot, but nearly all the time she sounds like at first she stuggles to burn fuel, but she'll eventually chokingly kicks in as long as i keep pumping her. Black/grey smoke is evident at first but then nothing even if i rev her hard.
I've changed the plugs and the leads, put in a new battery and the oil has recently been changed but still the problem prevails.
Any clues as to what i can check on???? It baffels me as she goes really good once she kicks in.
Also would the coil pack from a vs fit onto a vr
    All help is much appreciated
    thanx

I don't think that there's anything to gain from pumping the throttle (and would explain the black smoke) but I imagine that there will be a thread on here re cleaning the IAC (idle air control valve),definitely worth a shot and it will only cost you a couple of gaskets, unless you make your own in which case it will cost you zip. I've never done this on a Commodore so I wouldn't be giving you the best advice on how to do it. I will add though that if it's suggested that you use carby cleaner then I might suggest that you use WD40 or mineral turps instead cos it won't have a negative affect on the electrical connection.Good luck.

i have had a similar problem with dirty/leaking injectors... if the car sits for a while the fuel evaporates and starts fine. if it freshly turned off there is a pool of fuel that it has to clear before it kicks (explains black smoke too). has fuel filter been changed recently/regularly??

hi mate sorry about the tardy reply.
i only bought the car recently so i'm not sure when a full service was last performed however all filters look pretty new. When i changed the plugs the ones that came out looked good also.
It doesn't really sound as though it would be the same problem as ur's as she's hard to start most times unless i turn her off and back on within a minute or so.
I'm hoping it's the IAC valve,,,,,,,just waiting for it to arrive in the post......Ive been cleaning the one on there now and it does seem to make a difference however it needs replacing to know 4 sure. THANX

by turning off and back on, do you mean just to ignition without start then off then back to ignition then try to start and she fires? if so sounds like a fuel pressure prob.
By switching the ignition on the fuel pump will engage for a couple of seconds then turn off, doing it again with a space of 30+ seconds might be getting enough fuel and pressure into the system when the fuel pump kicks in again, enough for it to fire, when you rev it hard under load does it sound like it's starving for fuel?
could also be the fuel pump is letting all the fuel drain back into the tank when it's stopped which it shouldn't, could be on it's way out?... so the above mentioned method of starting it is actually just getting fuel back into the line and rail.
