when you say it idles fine, but when you take your foot off the throttle it dies, do u mean on deceleration? or you use throttle to start it and it starts ok, then you remove your foot and it dies?

    does it drive at all?

Sounds like a dirty MAF, IAC Valve or TPS. Try giving all these a clean and also your throttle body. Have any error codes been lodged?
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!

ok... the car does drive fine under power... but when i take my foot off to roll or apply the brake the car starts thumping from the air intake and spluttering... i tried cleaning the coil pack contacts and i replaced the internal fuel pump and filer. but it still does it. took it for a bash around frankston north and it went like the clappers.... both rears spinning and went hard.... but i did that to see if something was blocking up air/fuel intake and it seems to be ok now... still missing a bit but seems to be ok... i dont want to get half way home (from frankston, vi. to harden, nsw. about 650ks)..... especially because my son will be in the car with me..... thanks for the advice fellas. hopefully i can find the problem and fix it shortly....

As Black Stig suggested try cleaning your MAF, IAC and have you checked for error codes - you only need a paper clip to check them here is the how to check the error codes
    Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)

To me it sounds like your IAC might be very dirty or stuffed and letting too much air in causing it to lean out at idle

are you sure there isn't a misfire or maybe one of the leads could be damaged or not connected properly?

This is probably unhelpful but could it be possible that the air filter is blocked and needs replacing or just cleaned out?

Oxys, tps, iac. Does it almost die going into gear from park or neutral? If not, it's not the tps. I'd go with iac before oxys. Check error codes. Iac of eBay is about $40 or from Holden for more then that.

You need some MAF/contact cleaner to clean the MAF sensor. Super cheap auto sell that. Simply unscrew the maf sensor and spray the hell out of the insides with the cleaner. See if that clears up the errors. If 76 remains you have have screwed the oxy sensors which you would be best to get from a wrecker. Simple to remove and install with a shifter.

Your kinding about second hand oxys? Always replace with new ones. $140 for the pair of direct fit 4 wire oxy sensors from repco. Their a 24mm spanner.

Of course new is ideal. But old mate sounded like he was in a hurry, and local stores may not have them in stock. Sensors from a wrecker are a sure find, and would get him out of trouble.

a/f variation will may be an earthing problem with the 02 sensors. There's a how too on this site on how to fix this i believe. Prob worth either trying some 2nd hand sensors, nothing wrong with that to test... or wire up fresh earths for the 02's and see if that works

The problem i have with buying those sort of things from a wrecker is the fact that they dont test them half the time and you COULD end up with faulty sensors and out of pocket. Not saying thats the case with every wrecker. Its abit of a gamble.

no i dont think it will, there is many ways to open the bonnet without pulling the bonnet lever in the car, i believe that you can get a screw driver into the bottom of the bonnet popper and twist it or something and it should pop open.

to get the bonnet up lay under the radiator and there is a spring on the bonnet lock unhook it and the bonnet will pop and you can open it like you would if you pulled the cable
