it's not unsafe to do so, just make sure the shorter belt is the correct tension. technically you will get a very small improvement in power without running an A/C compressor but the difference would not be noticeable really

Do what I did and take out the whole air conditioning system it will lose about 10-13kg's from the weight of the car.

it won't make much difference at all, it's the same as driving around with the ac off..... make sure the belt is at the correct tension and that it is within range on the tension gauge... probably not a good idea to turn the ac on without it turning as it may burn the coil out in the front of the compressor as it won't be turning getting air flow or it may not, just disconnect the plug on the green wire about 10 cm's away from the front of the compressor and tie it up out of the way so it doesn't get caught in anything.

    cons:
you won't have ac on a hot summer day when it might be nice to have.

you'll save more weight if you leave the spare tyre, jack, the heavy black lining on the bonnet and all carpet in the boot at home than pulling all the ac system out

Disconnect the power connector and leave the compressor there. You, or someone you want to sell the car to, might actually want it someday.

Theres not a lot of power to be gained in any case. You'd be better off putting the right belt back on and just hitting the 'off' switch on the AC if you dont want to use it.

Any power increase you can feel in a Commodore by simple removing the AC belt at the moment is all in your head. The power difference will be measurable but not noticeable. Tiny, not worth doing.

Until you turn the AC on its just freewheeling. Almost no power loss at all. Its just an extra pulley with no load on it until the AC clutch engages.

Is it safe to do what you've done? Yeah, sure, just pointless.

That's why my car is much lighter, also it's free to get the air con de-gassed.

Makes changing engine mounts easy too. If you dont use it, remove it. Cheaper belts, one less pulley to buy and its cheaper to run without it then using the aircon.
