    Just get it done properly if you intend on keeping the car, can't imagine that would cost much. I'd be looking at sealing my boot if I were you. Even models as early as the VB are prone to rust in the wheel well, most commodore boots leak...
    I recently stopped my boot from leaking by putting a bead of silicone around the lights, boot garnish and through the extra number plate holes and the holes for my spoiler then screwed back through the silicone. No more wet carpet and no more swimming pool in the tire well!

    I would remove all the loose corosion thoroughly with a wire brush. Then give it a good spray with Fish oil. Leave to dry for at least a week in a well ventilated area, or until slightly tacky to the touch. Then coat the lot with Fibreglass resin and some matting if there is any loss of section.
    Then give the whole lot a couple off coats of Blackjack.
    And, like said above, try to fix the leak.

    I wouldnt. Paint doesnt combine with oil. It may or may not spray on, but in the end you will always have a layer of oil between the paint and the metal, and the paint will never bond.

    Just hit it with a wire brush and some rust converter, then prime it. Add a top coat or some bitument on top of the primer.

    Fibreglassing is unnecessary unless you have holes, and fibreglass will have the same problem as paint when it comes to bonding to fish oil.

    Fish oil is a useful rust preventative, but it needs to be the top layer. You cant use it as a rustproofing undercoat.

    Well I've used fish oil and fibreglass with no dramas. Everyone will have conflicting ideas/methods, though.

    Yeah but the common idea between most car painters and panelbeaters is that paint does not stick to oil.

    looks to me that there is a couple of sizable holes in the rust, you can see the grass through them.

    Personally I would cut out the rotten metal, and weld a new piece in. then paint it with some rust kill paint and you are done.

    If you don't fix the leak it will eventually come back, but a small hole in the bottom of the well will stop it pooling water until you get it fixed, then you can plug it up with some seam sealer.

    Usually rust in the spare wheel well means a leaking rear quarter window and the subsequent sagging roof lining and never ending fogging windscreen in the rain.

    Agreed. However fish oil dries. It's not like engine oil etc that will never dry!

    Why don't you take the time to read the instructions on a can of Fish oil;

    (Fish oil will penetrate deeply and will dry to form a water repellant, transparent film, which may be overpainted with any type of good quality enamel paint.)

    make sure you check all around your boot if you have that rust because above my taillights i could poke a screwdriver through with ease. look for bubbly or flakey paint as it might be a dodgy cover up or shotty fix
