Dropping Trans - Tips

Hi Guys.

Picked up my new transmission today and going to fit it this weekend (straight swap, same 6HDD trans)

Can anyone give me a brief run down on the process to dropping the existing trans (this is my first time doing a RWD and Auto Box).

I have:
Tools
Jackstands
A couple of jacks to prop the trans up
5L ATF + Filter & Gasket


Anything else I will need and any advice on the best way to tackle the job (bearing in mind I will be doing almost all of it on my own)

Unbolt the converter from the flex plate and slide it towards the auto unless you want a red/black shower.

how much oil is meant to be put in the torque converter before fitting it?

Also whats the best way to bolt the torque converter to the flex plate when I reinstall the trans....I assume the only way to do it with the engine in is to take the drive belt off and turn the crank shaft manually? which would be a pain as I don't think I have any sockets big enough or a breaker bar :/ and I don't have anyone to turn it while I line the flex plate holes up

Before you remove it, run the engine in P or N and disconnect one of the oil cooler lines at the radiator and run it into a catch can....this will dump most of the oil from the transmission. You should borrow a trolley jack and a lump of wood to lower and remove the trans....70KG on your chest don't do the bronchials any good!

yea you might want a bit of help dropping it out unless you're skilled with a jack! If you find removing it hard, then lifting it in will be twice as hard.

Few of my own suggestions....

grab one of the plastic rear shock absorber covers and slip it over the end of the trans (it fits perfectly) then wrap it well with duct tape. That will stop fluid from pouring out the end of it.

Before you remove the trans undo the two lines up high on the driver's side. Make sure you only use a spanner that fits perfectly snug, or else they WILL round off. from memory it'll be 13mm.

Last one.. when you fit the replacement ensure the converter is properly seated or else it will cause damage, then will piss oil out.

I got one out of a VH by myself lowed the tranny pulled it out the front.

One thing just came to mind I have seen somewhere can`t remember just right now a V-shaped thingy that you put on the trolley jack to support the tranny would be good to get when you install new one seeing you will be by yourself.
I`ll have a search and see if I can fing a pic.
