hi everyone, i have a 1994 vr commodore, with a rebuilt ecotec converted into it with a 5 speed, now i just recently got the car and already have a problem, i was told it needed a new coolent/temperature sensor so i got one and when i put the sensor in the car started ideling at 1500rpm, but also i noticed the oxygen sensor was unplugged i put the sensor in then the car would not even start it wouldnt even turn, but when both sensors are not plugged in the car runs fine,
any help would be great thankyou.
have you checked error codes?
i dare say that the conversion wasnt completed properly, if you cant plug in the sensors without it cranking, i'd say, something at the ecu end isnt right. from memory the vr and vs ecu's have different pinout locations for its sensors.
not 100% but i think the vr only ran 1 o2 sensor.
did you buy the car converted or did a shop do the conversion for you? if so i'd be taking it back for them to fix it.
i bought the car converted and im pretty sure it only has one o2 sensor i could only find the one sensor on the extractor, but it seems wierd that the car wont sit on the right rpm when the brand new coolent sensor makes the cars idel sits so high, is there anyway that i could fix the problem with the o2 sensor, also it has a ecotec ecu and it is a manual ecu i have checked if that makes things more simple. i havnt ran a error check yet but i have noticed when the coolent sensor is plugged in the orange engine light turns off with the o2 sensor even unplugged.
Are you sure it is a manual ecu? I have one here that is for the VS manual that clearly says manual.
this one i have has to be a aftermarket one it has a serial then labels 3.8l man but it is not a holden one.
also i had a look this morning and it has 2 o2 sensors
Replace both the 02 Sensors. Is it a proper manual wiring harness or has the auto one been modified? If its been modified check where they have cut into the wiring and make sure everything has been soldered or hasn't come lose. If you are still having problems, shoot me a PM as I maybe up that way sometime this week coming up(Used to live in Bellbird).

If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
remember its a VR with an Ecotec conversion, too, so any difference in loom may also contribute.
you've mentioned it has the ecotec ecu too. can you take some shots of the ecu, engine bay, things like the map sensor shouldnt be there now.
yeah ill go around to the car this afternoon and take some pics of the car and post them up so you can have a look
and ill have a look at the wiring and get two new sensors, the driver side sensor looks brand new but the other one looks pretty old.
well i changed the o2 sensors today and its running now with the coolent sensor plugged in aswell, but its ideling at 1500 still, any one have any ideas? also it is a vs manual wiring harness no cuts have been made, was maybe thinking the throttle may need adjusting??
Maybe check the IAC sensor to see if thats dirty. Reset to specs.
It should be set correctly but maybe get a mechanic to check the base idle setting aswell.
so i did a error check today and found out that i have a code 47 (crank angle refferance signal) anyone have a clue how to fix this problem im stumped dont even know what the problem means :S
Need a new crank angle sensor probably.
Its behind the harmonic balancer..
That would probably explain the 1500rpm idle. Its not getting a proper signal from your Harmonic Balancer.
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
cheers everyone for all your help will get a new sensor and let use know how it goes
