    Arrow VR Project- p plater

Just bought a VR from the bloke up the road. Its already had a lot of engine work done to it including it being bored out, new sleeves and the like (if this bloke is telling me the truth). its had an engine reco as well as the gearbox, the box is actually still under warranty for another 6 months. This will be my first real project due to 6 months ago getting my full time job as a chef and i want to sink some money into this ride. Any comments and suggestions are welcome im new to this project car thing and would appreciate any pointers. anyway heres the few pics ive already taken.

it needs four new tires and a tailpipe from the cat converter to the rear to pass roadworthy next week. i want to at least get it onto the road before Christmas, its getting registered in NSW but was registered in S.A.
    Thanks in advance

Should be an interesting project, but I'd be going over everything the last owner has done as it looks a little dodgy to me lol. If the motor mods are true then that's pretty awesome. What are your plans for it?

If you're after a new exhaust I have a spare standard one just hanging around. Shoot me a PM if you want it.

yeah i plan to bring it all up to scratch before i start really getting into working on it. im going to cut and polish te whole thing and hope it comes up ok and get the bonnet resprayed and fix a few other small things up. the previous owner said the fuel pump was mounted wrong by one bolt or something? but i have to rotate that to the correct position as well but its not a major thing, the car still runs well as it is. it definitely feels like its a lot more powerful than my last two commys which where a vn and a vs. i plan to eventually get it painted in the new ivy green that holden is doing but im thinking about other colours like an orange or something more noticeable. il be redoing the interior in leather, dash mods such as back lighting colour changes and an mounting an ss induction kit to it. is there anything else p plate legal i could do performance wise? and any other cosmetic ideas?

Who painted the throttle cable housing? looks dodgy as hell! (dont know actual name) Takes 2 minutes to take it off and looks so much better instead of having overspray and half painted objects.. lololol

Hope it turns out well for you :P good luck..

Hey, I am a P plater myself, well almost got my full license now.. But I took off mine to do it. Though I did try to paint my power steering pump pulley while engine was running.. that was a bad idea haha.. had little dots of paint spreaded every where for ages lol

Haha yeah the guy i bought it off painted the throttle cable housing as well as the brake calipers in the same colour. ill fix that up when I go to do up the brakes hopefully. just bought a set of wheels for it off a friend of mine. The black Monaro rims with the low profile tires on it so that should look ok, and pass roadworthy once i mount the new exhaust to it. after roadworthy ill be getting the bonnet sprayed and have the interior detailed so i can start it all anew. im also thinking a body kit but i still have to find one i like that is still remotely unique with the vr. another thing i have to do to it is rotate the fuel pump (the bloke i bought it off mentioned it was mounted wrong and cuts out around corners on low fuel). how would i go about doing that? ive deal with fuel pumps on a TS magna but not a commodore before.

    Cheers guys

ok new news, ive slashed my left hand open ( im a first year chef) and cut two tendons and a bit of muscle damage so im on workers comp for at least two weeks so i have plenty of time to work on the car but i only have one hand to do so. im looking for help with my fuel issues. i drove it to my mums place about 5-6kms away from where i live and it cut out completely with no warning coming down a fairly large hill. its was ok coming up but i felt the power steering cut out and noticed i had lost all power and the engine stalled. could this be the swirl pot? also i was temped to give it a boot around a corner and it wouldnt change gear (its auto recently recod). could this also be due to the lack of fuel getting up the line or the gearbox itself? thanks guys, im just new to the whole project thing and im noticing more and more wrongs. cheers

Sorry to hear about the hand but I 'spose 2 weeks off is good news? : )
My VS stalls on gas occasionally...can get hairy...so yeah yah better fix that pump ASAP.
Besides, it's probably sucking in air which can't be a good thing.
I hope the guy who installed the pump didn't do any other work on the car : )

Fixing the pump will be quite difficult with one hand I imagine...and you probably don't want petrol in that cut of yours...ouchy!!!
Anyway, here's a link (external) to the basic procedure (for a VS)...(there could be a better one on here for a VR in the 'How to's'...try a search?)
How do you change a Holden commodore vs station wagon fuel pump

And here's a good thread (with pics) showing the VS pump, swirlpot and tank...opened up so you can see what's going on in there, very handy to know...
Fuel Tank,Fuel Pump Assembly and Swirl Pot.

From memory, on my VS, the round part of the assembly that bolts to the tank is squared off slightly at the top which can aid in correct location.
I know you have a VR but they should be pretty similar.
Basically, to get this job done, you'll be jacking up the car, taking off the wheel and undoing 5 bolts.
    The gasket should be reusable.
You will lose most of your petrol...it drains out of the lower bolt holes and is messy. (Don't reuse it in the car)
Once the bolts are out spin the assembly clockwise and then 'lob' it back down into the swirl pot...it's a feeling...and why you should look at the 'open tank' thread above.
You'll know it's right when the bolt holes are close and matched up.

Actually, it kinda concerns me that this offset install was done in the first place...and not rectified immediately. (Bit hard to believe that someone would be that lazy/idiotic???)
So I hope it wasn't done for some other insidious reason...eg. excessive gunk in the tank etc...but all you can do is fix it and see what happens.
Don't want to worry you unnecessarily but it may be pertinent if you have future fuel problems.
Worst case tho...clean tank and new pump...no big deal. : )

    Good luck.

just a tip for changing fule pump is to only jack the car on one rear wheal this will move all the fule over to one side of the tank and will minimise fule loss
ps dont get any fule in your cut hand it will hurt like a bitch

Id try and figure out what's wrong with it but I guess I've just tackled a car thats beyond my skill and would be better off making what I can from it and trying to find a more stable base car to toy with. Something I don't need to get up and running before I play with it I guess. And cheers again for the help mate, and the hands not doing to bad, still hurts like a b$&@h but the painkillers are ok haha.
