Default metal pipe under dash gets very hot!

does anyone know what the metal pipe is on the drivers side of the dash just behind the hot/cold knob and fan speed switch?mine is heating up very hot-to hot to touch and i can feel heat coming from it on my left leg while im driving!

You must have a sensitive leg!....that pipe is the hot water pipe to the heater. If you dial COLD it should not get hot. If it still gets hot then a vacuum hose to the heater tap may have come off which leaves the hot water flow on at all times....this is not uncommon.
    Good Luck.

Heater tap could also be broken letting hot coolant continuously flow through the heater core. Replaced mine a while ago and stopped the same problem.

When you dial COLD, the switch applies vacuum to the heater tap, which then closes cutting off the supply of HOT coolant to the heater.
I cannot figure how the pipe can be HOT when you dial COLD and have COLD air coming out when the pipe is HOT......if the pipe is HOT then the heater must be HOT and the air coming out should be HOT.
However, I've just thought about it and BINGO - the air is cold because the airconditioning is cooling the HOT air down......so that indicates your heater tap is not turning the coolant supply to the heater off.
To check, press the AC button OFF, dial to COLD and see if the air is HOT.....if still cold then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Check that the dial is turning the vacuum off as per the attached pics:metal pipe under dash-heaterbutton..jpgmetal pipe under dash-hotvacswon.jpgmetal pipe under dash-hotvacswoff.jpgmetal pipe under dash-heateroff.jpgmetal pipe under dash-heateron.jpgmetal pipe under dash-heater-vacuum.jpg

Note that in the first pic, the operating rod is not attached.

yeh i had to unconnect the rod and pull the arm right back as far as it would go towards the back of the cold/hot dial on my console then reconnect the arm and it fixed my problem...thanks to hako.

The gears on my vs nob were stripped. So I had to move the rod myself to go between hot and cold. Burnt myself a few times before I got used to it.
