Hey guys.
I have searched and search and I'm just looking for a beter opinion from some people that no abit more about these motors.
I purchased a l67 out of a written off Vs statesman. The person I have brought it off was selling it for a mate. I no it sounds dodgey but this guy is a genuine bloke and have spoken to him since.
Me being me and being the most forgetful person around forgot to check the dip stick when buying it and when I got home looked at it and found some loverly milky oil. Called the bloke back and he told Leto check the intake manifold gaskets and he would supply me with a set at his cost. Sure enough I did find a slight crack in one of the water jacket sleeves. Then I tipped the motor over and pulled Off the sump to find a large amount of white custard looking stuff all over my crank and what not. Looked into the bottl of the sump and found alot of coolant could even see the green colour sitting around in puddles.
Know I'm worried weather it still could be a head gasket or it was just that inlet manifold gasket.
I have orders a head gasket set Wich has all the gaskets so all I need is the knowledge of replacing the head gasket and the valve stem seals to.
Thanks for your help
Mate the other thing is if it was that bad there is a good chance the bearings are seized or close to it and your bores could be all scratched up from the oil not doing its job and protecting all the wear surfaces including the bottom end bearings.
So sorry to say you can change all the thing you said but the fact is from what you have described it sounds like it's been stuffed for a while and made worse by the fact it got to sit in it for a while not moving and id say you're going to have nothing but issues with it even with the gaskets done. I would be advising a re ring new bearings and a hone of the block id be asking for my money back or a significant amount of it.
o and shave the heads to be safe
What did you pay for it?
Not what I wanted to hear2400 with 90k on the clock. He claims the motor ran perfect in the car just before they pulled it out
thats a bold claim id highly doubt them Km and that issue id say add 200k to that and $2400 is alot id take it back or take him to small claims court i bought a complete wrecked VT with 124000km on it for $1600 2 months ago i haven't seen a L67 sell for $2000+ for a while mostly $1500-$2000 sorry to say sounds to me he took a lend of ya will cost $2400+ to fix it if you pay someone to do all the work.
O and very few people are genuine when it comes to im selling this for a mate he can talk to you before and after it dont matter you will see how genuine when you ask for your money back and give him the engine back or you keep it and he gives you $1600 back because all you have there is a usable top end and they sell for around $800
Well considering what you have told us there is no way that motor was running properly when it was in the car.But if he is still willing to pay to fix problems with the motor thats a good sign but he would of had to of been deaf, blind and mute to think that motor was in good nic.
The rocker gear is spotless. No milky stuff to be seen.this makes me think maybe it's happend while it was sitting there. Apparently it's been sitting there for a year or so

Well lets hope, but its still not a good sign you seem like a good bloke that was just a bit forgetful when buying the motor. But you live and you learn is the bloke you got it from still willing to pay for parts needing replacement?
Looking at it, it does look as though the water got in while sitting. At the very least I would be stripping it and cleaning it before trying to start it. Inspect all the bearings for wear, maybe throw a set in for good measure.
well thats it im no mechanic but im trying to learn and think about it if it was running like this then all that milky oil would be threw the rocker and that.
how do you check the bearings and whats the best way to clean all that crap off.
thanks alot for the help so far
Inspecting the bearings requires sump removal.
While there, do front and rear main seals.
Caustic soda/sodium hydroxide. Just buy ct14 or similiar degreaser if your not familiar with brewing your own.
Forget about caustic soda. It can be dangerous.
Yeh I'm familiar with sump removal and I have seals to replace. But what am I looking for when inspecting and how do I go about cleaning the crank and so on?
Your main issue to look for is corrosion/rusting from the parts being bathed in water for so long.
Also look for any pitting, scoring, burning, cracks or excessive slop after cleaning with c14/kero 1:1.
Oil all parts immediately after washing.
Once clean, any deviation from normal should be obvious once apart.
I think your going to be ok. The photos give hope.
Ok thanks alot for the help I'll give it all a good lookis it worth doing the head gaskets? The kit I've orderd comes with them and valve stem seals
im not 100% but you might be ok it looks like most of it was in the bottom of the sump the only bits on the crank and they look like the dropped there from the pickup when you spun the engine around but not 100% sure the rest looks to have a nice coat of oil still on it if you havent already id be removing the pickup and cleaning that crap up asap. if he removed the dip stick tube there is a chance water got in there but again cant be sure it doesnt look like its done the rounds in the engine just do what you have planed clean it up inspect a few things replace head and inlet manifold gaskets and id think you will be right becasue if the engine ran like that you would have some on the heads for sure
