that will be the tune you will need to get it touched up to reduce the idle speeds you may be able to reduce it a little adjusting the idle stop on the throttle body it sounds to me a generic tune and its set to idle high to prevent stalling

What compression and manifold are you running?

I'm not surprised. 286 is waaaaaay too much cam for a stocker 5 litre. 268 is about as big as I would go for any stock comp 5 litre. Maybe 276 with 9.5:1 and stock manifold. The only thing a 286 cam will give you on a otherwise standard motor is a loapy idle, crap bottom end and just when it starts to get going lack of compression + bananas will strangle the top end. Car will most definitely be slower down the 1/4 by a long way. Whoever recommended that cam to you should hang their head in shame.

Rule of thumb with cams, tb's and pipes - less is more in 95% of cases.

That's the point. You won't get a good idle. Put in a (much) smaller cam and you will have a good note, a car that idles and something that is *much* better to drive.

as reaper said 286 came way too big for a stock donk. my brother threw a 286 and hi stall in his vs...... ive got a stock 5.0l in my vh and now i dust him, before we were pretty even. oh and it ran like a pig so he ended up building the rest of the motor to suit the cam....a completely back to front approach of chasing a few more ponies. but once tuned for low idle did sound sweet

Start at 7:1 and see how that takes you.
