Default Vr 5ltr Over Heating issue

    Hi guys.
My Vr SS has a strange over heating problem. .
When driving along on the highway the temp gauge sits between a quarter and half.
As soon as i turn the air con on it creeps up to between half and 3quarters.
I turned the air con off when it got 2 3quarters and it dropped down to around normal. I turned the air con back on and the temp gauge stayed around half until i started slowing down when coming into a town and the temp gauge started creeping up again so i just turned the air con off.

Lol sorry for making it so long but Ive tried to explain as best as i can.
Any help at all will be great because its really strange!
    Thanks in advance!

Two things I can think of might be wrong, clutch fan is on it's way out and the condenser might be dirty.
I clean my condenser once a year with degreaser.

Also flush your cooling system regularly.
If the radiator is very old you might be up for a new one too.

    The radiator is only new.
The car has been sitting for a while tho.
The fan kicks in as soon as the air con is activated but Thats when the temp gauge goes up. As soon as its turned off then it cools down to normal. But yeah i turned the air con on again once the temp went to normal and it was fine until i slowed down to about 60ks.

Clutch fan is the mechanical blade fan on the motor, if you can't hear it roar when the motor is hot then the clutch might be up for replacement.

Ah right ill check that in the morning.
I thought when i turned the air con on if anything it should bring vic engine temp down because it engauges the thermo.?

Nah if the clutch fan is marginal it will show when the system is fully loaded ie A/C on in hot temp/traffic etc.

All the thermo is doing is blowing hot air off the condenser and onto the radiator.

Its your temp sender or ECU... This has been covered more times then any other VR issue.

P.S Use the forum search bar next time (its free)

I think the VR issue you refer to is related to the V6 engine not the V8.

89VN, If you are getting to 3/4 at highway speeds with the A/C on then I'd be suspecting something like the water pump, radiator cap or thermostat. Having said that, even at highway speeds you could show intermittent high temperature readings depending on factors such as high outside temperature, airflow restrictions such as a car bra or high tail winds. That's assuming you have a standard V8 and not a grout filled block which decreases the coolant capacity of the engine.

    Yes, true..

Perhaps I should have read the entire question.. (facepalm)

    My fault

But after reading it 89vn, I think the fan is stuck on low speed, perhaps a new set of fans is required or if you can track down a set of AU Falcon fans then use those, there is a link I can provide you with the install of them from this forum if needed.

AU Fans are work really well... Worth a try....

    Hey 89vn,

Good to see another Waggaite on JC.

I agree with BlackVXGTS. I would be looking at the simple things first. Thermostat (check before fitting), radiator cap, fluid levels, air flow obstructions, clutch fan (I have a spare if you want to test). The other thing that I would look at, would be getting hooked up to a Tech I or Tech II (with someone who knows how to drive it) and confirm the water temps.

    Cheers,
