As above - also pull the trans dipstick and check oil colour - should be pinkish and not brown/black. If cash is short you can add some transmission stop slip - ask at SuperCheap/Repco what is the best one - costs about $20-30. This cannot do any harm and can give you breathing space. Trans service will cost from $150 up and a buggered transmission can cost $2000 to overhaul.(don't ask me how I know).
    Good Luck.

Those prices are probably Sydney prices - out of the capital city we pay more - prices I quoted were correct 2 weeks ago at all Toowoomba trans shops as I blew my trans and looked at alternatives. I always have considered good trans oil to be pink when new, but admittedly if you mix water with it, it does look more pinkish....maybe I should start calling it red - thanks for pointing that out to me Michael. Wreckers here want $600 cash for a 2nd hand trans and it's take it or leave it......lack of competition!

Forgot to mention that's $600 with 3 months warranty....but to claim the warranty involves pulling the bad trans again and getting another to fit back in and that's if they have another one - if not you wait....one hell of a lot of stuffing around and I'd probably dump the car.
What I mean't by "take it or leave it" was that the price was fixed and no use arguing.
