Hi, I have a '94 VR Statesman, V8 5L, automatic.
Have been having trouble starting it, winds and winds until you think the battery is going to die then she'll start for a moment then die. Can end up doing this up to 6 times, OR sometimes she'll start on the first try. Doesn't matter whether it is hot or cold.
Rang a mechanic, told us to a diagnostic on it, came up with the following:
12 System Pass OK
15 ECT sensor - voltage too high (Auto transmission only)
16 ECT sensor - voltage unsteady
Mechanic and his boss thought the prob was a Temperature Sensor, we that was replaced, still coming up with the same Diagnostic faults.
Now she won't idle properly, have to hold foot down when starting to keep revs up, to move her around the yard.
Does anyone know what these faults mean, I need this car to run, it's my family car!!! HELP!!!
Just make sure the coolant temperature sensor was replaced (measures the coolant temperature for the PCM/ECU) and not the temperature sender which measures coolant temperature for the temperature gauge on the dash. After replacing the sensor, was the battery disconnected or the engine fuse removed for a couple of minutes to reset the PCM/ECU and any recorded diagnostic codes? If not you will still be seeing the old codes. If you are still getting the codes after the PCM/ECU was reset you need to inspect the ETC sensor connectors and wiring harness, and the PCM/ECU terminals D16 (ECT sensor temp signal) and D3 (sensor earth) for corrosion.
Thanks for the info,we didn't do the battery or fuse thing, so we'll check it tomorrow, and see how we go.
