where's the best place to get a gearbox for a 1994 vr commdore cheapish i already enquired at the wreckers and they said $350 is there anywhere i might find one cheaper that i can trust or just go with that one as i dont have much $$$$ at the moment?

And are they very hard to put in or should i get some to do it professionally?

well am looking at a 2hand rebuild gearbox stage 2 shiftkit,2500 stally etc 4 my ride...

Got told the faster way and better way is to take the whole motor out as the conveter is hard to take out...

My mate i said usually takes a day to do depending on how fast u want it done..

To be on a bugget would do it urself with sum1 who knows what they are doin!

They would charge $300-$400 at a workshop to fit, mite be cheaper if u ring around.

Ive got a good gearbox which has no slipping 4 $150

    Well mate hope this helps
    my other ride has tits..

yh mush easier to take engine out, i changed mine over, luckily i had a second box sittin i nteh shed form a car i wrecked, and took me ages to remove it from the motor from under the car, i was almost tempted to take the motor out half way thru taking it out from under neath, see if there is a wrecking vr wit the same gearbox, and buy the car as a complete, then u cna make money back from selling parts

I went through this exercise a fortnight ago - up here you won't get a box that is any good for under $550 with warranty. Mechanics here don't like changing them for some reason or other and the only one we found was a bit dodgy and wanted $450 cash upfront. The auto trans specialist want $700 to do the swap!...also $2100 to reco the old box. My bro in law and I took 3 days to do the swap ourselves - we both get on well together which helps - first day was basically raising the car so there was 700mm clearance under the car to get the box out...and it had to be rock solid as you are dead if it falls so we took our time. Next day was pulling the old box out with the aid of a trolley jack and cradle...you have to drop the exhaust and the propeller shaft etc. Day 3 was installing with a lot of time lining the new box up plus some of the bolts etc were difficult to get to.
So it is do-able and satisfying as long as you have tools and know what you are doing....you'll save at least $500 which buys a lot of beer - most of which you drink during the 3 days.
So if 2 old pensioners can do it so can you.
